Is this huge a huge piece of shit? YES!
This film is a failure on almost every level. Camerawork, acting, singing, choreography, direction, writing and ESPECIALLY the editing were all astonishingly bad.
But yet, some how I found myself dancing in my chair. I came out with a smile on my face.
What can I say. It's this generations Xanadu

It exceeded my expectations. The vocals are no match for the original songs by ABBA, but the passion more than makes up for it. "The Winner Takes It All" and the cinematography blew me away!

MCT:August 18, 2008Mamma Mia! is a film adaptation of the West End stage musical, based on the songs of successful pop group ABBA, with additional music also composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. Despite opening in the USA on the same date as the critically acclaimed film The Dark Knight on July 18, 2008, the film did very well at the box office and had the largest opening weekend of any musical film in U.S. history. Like the stage musical, the film's title originates from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia".
The plot of Mamma Mia!, while being a lighthearted comedy, involves several subplots about the eight main characters and attempts to resolve the fate of each: young Sophie, her fiance Sky, her mother Donna with two lady friends (who sang together years ago as Donna and the Dynamos), plus the three men Donna had been with in midsummer 21 years ago (Sam, Harry and Bill). Each of them has been concealing secrets from the others, and the frantic pace of wedding preparations will lead to further miscommunications.
Meryl Streep heads the cast of the film, playing the role of single mother Donna Sheridan. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård play the three potential fathers to Donna's daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). -

MCT:August 17, 2008I was never a huge ABBA fan but this movie made me one! Full of razzle dazzle, over-the-top music numbers and way more songs than needed it's nothing more than summer fun! The lack of a story line adds to it but like I said it's so much fun you don't really care! It looks good, it sounds good (with one exception), and it feels good (with one exception). The exception: Pierce Brosnan- WTF! I was never a fan, but really, REALLY!? There was no audition, no question as to if the man could sing a single note? This is a musical you know! I literally prayed everytime he came on that he wouldn't sing! The audience all giggled when he did. I mean others wern't perfect but Colin Firth's shy nerdyness covers it and Stellen Skarsgard's oddness covers his but you don't give a lead role to a man who looks and sounds in pain! Ugh it was awful! But otherwise the soundtrack rocked! I am now an ABBA fan! See this movie! It's total cheese- stereotypical musical style, but it's wonderful! Now I want to see the Broadway show!

Although the plot is incredibly poor with a number of plot holes that would normally be totally unacceptable to any film, and with rather questionable singing talents, this film is surprisingly fun! The acting is all top notch (if the singing isn't), and the film is very tongue-in-cheek with some wonderful comedy!

This movie goes way beyond chick-flick. And this is coming from someone who actually likes romantic-comedies. But I took a chance and didn't end up liking it. It was over the top dramatic, only funny during a few times in the movie, and I can only assume doesn't do the actual show justice.

This is a lot more than I expected. Great storyline and songs to go with it. I laughed so so much and loved it. Just goes to show you that humor doesn't have to be nasty and stupid like movies like Superbad and Pineapple Express. For those that enjoy good music and pure laughter that isn't tainted by drugs and sex, you should definitely see this movie!

Just one of those movies, that I could watch again and again! It was really sweet, the sets were amazing, the acting was over the top but affective and MOST of the singing (sorry pierce brosnan fans) was great! Absolutely loved Winner Takes It All and Lay All Your Love On Me - why are ABBA songs so catchy?

Ultimate feel good movie, despite my mother hating ABBA she, we loved the movie. Pierce is a bit flat in areas but the overall movie is worth a watch. Bonus points to the viewers that actually sing along to the movie

I found it pretty hard to decide how I felt about this film. It was definatly the ultimate cheese fest the trailer made it out to be - and some of the singing was a little hit and miss, but some how the charm this movie had made up for that. I love Dominic Cooper and think he has a big future ahead of him, with his cheeky, but adorable face and his amazing acting ability, so that might be part of why this film won me over in some respect. Amanda Seyfried also has a big future ahead of her, as she proves in this film that she can easily pull of the leading roles with no trouble aqnd her singing is one of the best in the film.
Although sometimes their singing was a little on the bad side Streep, Brosnan, Skarsgard and Firth made up for it in their humour, and Walter's and Baranski were perfectly cast in their supporting roles.
I can imagine it being so much better on stage, and I am going to drive myself mad singing Abba songs in my head all week, but the location was beautiful, you could really tell what a good time the whole cast had filming and despite all the bad things about it I still left the cinema with a huge smile on my face which must have a recommendation in there somewhere. Not to mention it is worth a watch just to see Firth, Brosnan, Skarsgard and Cooper dressed in those outifts as the credits rolled! I haven't been that amused by actor in an outfit since Firth's leather trousers incident in 'What A Girl Wants'! -
MCT:August 16, 2008this might be a bit biased seen as im a boy and i was FORCED to see this, but it was CRAP. these extras just zoom out of nowhere and know all lyrics and dance moves. no lack of cheesiness, the main girl looks like her eyes are goin to pop out, singing in some parts was lame, especially pierce prosnan who seems to have lost his balls somewhere on the set of Die Another Day. Terrible, only gets a star for its slightly funny bits.

Just got back from seeing it----GREAT!! I love musicals and this one didn't disappoint. Little too cheesy in parts and Pierce Brosnan it hard to take but other than that, very enjoyable!

Will people please stop insulting Mamma Mia? If you don't like the movie, then why are you even on its page? I personally thought that it was a great movie. It was very fun and followed the musical pretty closely, although the musical had more talented performers. Great movie overall!
