Husband and wife team Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin have shown that they know exactly how to produce innocent, mindless, and charming fun for kids. The two also paired up for the screenplay of "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D", and both films share very similar aspects in theme and a lot of love for science. The thing that's so fun about the movie I just mentioned and "Nim's Island" is that they're films for kids that are in no way offensive and cruel. They don't try and appeal to an older audience with pop culture references and mean-spirited comedy, it all simply exists in it's own world where even trapped on a small boat in the middle of the ocean, the characters smile and never lose even the last bit of hope. "Nim's Island" is stupid, implausible, and it's themes are flat-footed and obvious... but that being said, it's just such a darn good time that you'll forget all of it.

Resourceful 11-year-old Nim (Abigail Breslin) and her father Jack (Gerard Butler), a marine biologist, live on a remote South Pacific island. It's what fantasies are made of - the vegetation is lush, the bearded dragons are talkative, the pelicans seem to read minds, and they have quite the broadband internet connection (no, unfortunately the laptops aren't made out of twigs and leaves). You'd think that Nim is a lonely girl since she gets no human interaction, but she loves her life. Her animal friends keep her company - such as the soccer-playing sea lion who boogies down when it's time to party. Hell, it even lets her ride it into the heart of a typhoon. Now, let me ask you, can you really rely on a human friend to swim you into certifiable death? Yeah, I didn't think so!

Nim's imagination runs wild with her favorite adventure hero Alex Rover (also played by Gerard Butler in his best Indiana Jones impression). However, she isn't aware that the writer of these novels, Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster), is an agoraphobic who won't leave the house without hand sanitizer and canned soup, if she even leaves at all. One day, Jack is out trying to collect samples of nanoplankton when a monsoon destroys his boat and leaves him stranded in the middle of the sea. Now Nim, alone on the island, calls out to Alex Rover to protect the island while she awaits the return of her father.

I should definitely note that I found this to be a bit too challenging for a very young audience. Not only does it move a mile a minute and it really crams a whole lot into an hour and half, some of the parallel stories are bound to confuse an audience expecting nothing more than sea lions boogying down. The story follows the three characters and they rarely share screentime with one another, so we're left going from a father trying to get back to his daughter, an apparently schizophrenic woman not having the courage to leave her house, and a worried Nim stuck on the island. While I enjoyed it, I can see why it wouldn't work for a lot of people, especially the young audience. The pacing is really strange and all over the place.

I've read lots of complaints on Jodie Foster not having the abilities to get across slapstick comedy, but I really loved her. Yeah, she overcompensated as she's not much of a comedic actress - but it totally fit the tone of this movie. I mean, c'mon, this is a movie where Nim catapults her lizard companions into mobs of angry tourists. If it was going for any realism, the bearded dragons and skinks would splatter all over the beach as tourists stomp the unlikely survivors. The whole film is completely implausible and stupid. Looking for realistic heartwarming characters is a bit much... I just became so invested in this wacky world that I felt Foster's character really fit the tone the film set out for. She was goofy and over-the-top in what is essentially a live action cartoon.

What's also worth mentioning is absolutely stunning cinematography and great imagination. I loved the scene near the beginning where Nim is imagining Alex Rover fighting off the baddies in a desert while her bed sits in the heart of the action. In the last few years, fantasy films have been limited to "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" knockoffs, and this movie dismisses all of those aspects. It'll send parents on a nostalgic trip and show the young audience something they haven't really seen.

"Nim's Island" tells children to become the hero of their own story, whether it be by escaping the fires of a volcano or simply leaving the comfort of your own home. It's obvious and fairly redundant, but the film is so charming and good-spirited that it's refreshing and impossible not to enjoy. Definitely a blast to watch.

I already watched, I love the kid Abegail Breslin, when she star in Little Miss Sunshine, when she received the call about the pageant, the scream laughed me out loud. cute.

This was a really stupid movie. The little girl was dumb and made dumb decisions. The storyline was so stupid. The only plus was that Jodie Foster was funny.

The film was interesting because of Jodie Foster, yes more footage could have been given to the dad, a little bit more of maybe the captain onboard the ship, saying something like "theres the perfect island"...etc. But as a family film I thought it was great! Some people I guess that reviewed the movie thought the volcano portion was not connected or needed finishing, but the simple fact is.....you can have steam and a small ash blowout (notice it did not lay on the ground) without a full blown lava eruption. The volcano was what broughnt Nim and Jodie Foster together so I can not understand others comments about the volcano.

I liked the people, the story line was kind of weak. The ending could have been stronger. My son was very dissaponted.

its ok for a family movie. the animals are the bast thing a bout the movie. Though I m a fan of Gerard. Living on a island like that would be a little hard, but if you can pull it off power to you.

this was a great movie to watch with my kids but it doesnt do a good enough job of holding an adult audience. i found myself a little bored only a third of the way into the movie and i clock watched from there. the end was touching and fun and it had character, but they could have done more with the home alone style theme of defending the island. really just average.

A very light-hearted adventure flick for kids. It's cheesy and predictable, but completely enjoyable for those who don't take it too seriously.

Not really what I expected out of Jodie Foster, but then again I did because this is a kid's movie...it was alright. Can't help but like Abigail Breslin.

Sweet and a little brainless. It's a cutesy escape into a picturesque and wacky adventure. Jodie Foster is also really funny and plays the nervous agoraphobic writer to a T.

The movie is geared more toward kids then adults, but I still liked it. I thought the characters were endearing. Some of it wasn't quite believable, but it still worked. The acting was good as expected given the talent of the three main actors. A worthwhile movie to see at least once
