Plot: In 1927, dashing actor Don Lockwood and blonde bombshell Lina Lamont are one of Hollywood's favorite romantic teams, though Lina mistakenly believes that their on-screen love is for real. Don and his ...( read more read more... )less famous partner Cosmo have worked their way to the top the hard way, through vaudeville, stunt work etc. When The Jazz Player arrives and sound changes everything in the movie business, Don is ready. Not so Lina, whose shrill voice makes a mockery of the musical that their new film has been made into, despite the best efforts of a voice coach. Aspiring actress Kathy Selden saves the film by dubbing Lina's voice, but Don is in trouble when he starts to fall in love with her.

Excellent portrayal of the shift to sound films in Hollywood at the end of the 1920's. Great songs, and though Gene Kelly was a hard taskmaster, the pure dedication he had to this picture shines through.

Cosmo Brown: Talking pictures, that means I'm out of a job. At last I can start suffering and write that symphony.
R.F. Simpson: You're not out of job, we're putting you in as head of our new music department.
Cosmo Brown: Oh, thanks, R.F.! At last I can stop suffering and write that symphony.

"now, the world is so full of a number of things I'm sure we should all be as happy as, but are we? no. definately no. positively no. decidedly no. uh-uh! Short people have long faces, and long people have short faces. big people have little humor, and little people have no humor at all. And in the words of that imortal bard, Samuel J. Snodgrass, as he was about to be led to the guillotine, Make 'em laugh, make 'em laugh..." I love quoting this movie!!!
