Star and resident emotional core Field plays M'Lynn Eatenton, mother of Shelby (Roberts), who is hours away from marrying a lawyer. They go to the local salon to get their hair styled, and, as it happens, battling bats Clairee (Dukakis) and Louisa (MacLaine) also have appointments in preparation for the event. This allows self-described "glamour technician" Truvy Jones (Parton) to hire Annelle (Hannah), the new girl in town who nobody knows It's good drama, and it's got strong performances from the predominatly female cast, including Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, and Shirley MacLaine.

Sally Fields played the hell out of this role! Dolly parton was adorably fashionable....love love LOVE shirley maclaine in this movie....her evil comments were right on time...i think i might steal some and use them on unsuspecting family members, lol. Olympia Dukakis and Tom Skerritt are two of the most sexiest older celebrities I've ever seen!!! This movie...man...it hit me (points) right here! lol

Emotional chick-flick that gets quite sad. It's about friendship, despair, heartbreak and hope. Great performances all-round from some excellent actresses including Julia Roberts, Shirley Maclaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis. But the best performance came from Sally Field. Tom Skerritt was also good as the father. One of the better chick-flicks.

The most intense scene is when Sally Field is in the cemetary screaming about losing her daughter. It is very sad. But she said later life goes on.
