Susan Pevensie: That doesn't exactly rhyme.
Disney's version of Lord of the Rings, complete with a lack of blood and hit or miss special effects.
Opposed to LOTR and other live action versions of fantasy novels, I have actually read this entire 7 book series, and was very dissapointed in thei first entry.
Seeing as how LOTR was met with great approval from the majority of those fans, It's not simply the old "the book is always better" line of reasoning that makes this ok.
Like I mentioned, the film is way too Disney. Its very childish in ways that detract from the spirit of the books.
Casting wise, I guess they did a good enough job. Each child represents their respective character appropriately, although that doesn't make Edmond less annoying. Liam Neeson makes for a good Aslan. James McAvoy seems a little odd in his role...especially with his interactions with Lucy.
It was nice to see Tilda Swinton, not the most well known Hollywood actress, in the role of the White Witch. She easily makes her role count and gets across the evil nature of her character.
The world of Narnia is very hit or miss. On one hand, New Zealand, once again, makes for one of the most beautiful places to make films, as the landscapes are nicely done. On the other hand, some of the characters seem so poorly done, considering what can be done today with CGI and how much money we know Disney has to spend.
In terms of epicness, the film suffers from being a very tame PG film. I know it's Disney, but they went for a little more mature with 'Pirates', so they might as well here.
Even though the film is adapting the book, its also a little clunky in getting the story to unfold in a well enough sense. Sort of like Troy, some events are glossed over, while others are expanded upon.
Overall, this could have been better, so I can only hope the other books are given more justice.
Mrs. Beaver: Those aren't badgers!
Actually astonishing. I don't know why it got such poor reviews when it ran circles around the 70s cartoon I saw once or twice on PBS (though it was charming and oh, so, hippie). I have a place in my heart for both versions now.
During the intense years of World War II, The Pevensie children are sent to live with a professor abroad to protect themselves from the daily bombings of London. The professor?s house in dull style of what they are use to and with strict rules. One day of playing hide and seek, the children discover a magical passage through a wardrobe to a mystical land called Narnia. Narnia is controlled by a White Witch who has the land frozen and under her control. A prophecy tells the story of two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve to free the land. Are the Pevensie children a part of that prophecy?
With the success of Lord of The Rings, Disney opted to produce the children based fantasies, The Chronicles of Narnia. The move was a solid effort as the special effects and story line stole the show. The movie was fabulous effort and the talking creatures were one of the best on screen to date. Fantasy fans and fans of the book will be pleased with this effort. The movie was faithful to the book and the acting showed some promising young stars that could be hitting the screen often and successfully. The Lion, the witch, and the wardrobe receives four mythical creatures out of five for being a faithful adaptation and strong effort for the beginning of a great series.
I totally loved this was, one of those ultimate fantasy flix! First time I saw this I was totally blown away. Couldn't wait to see it again. All the creatures, the visual effects were stunning. The story was insane and I loved every minute of it. I truly hope they make all 7 books into movies! AWESOME
A bit slow a first, but I'm a CS Lewis fan, and they did a good job with the interpretation.
