not so good...apparently i didn't get those chemistries between kate winslet-jack black or even cameron diaz-jude law...
Would like to see... Meant to be quite good.
I Liked it.
Nancy Meyers' (aka master of guilty pleasures) most accomplished film to date. Top class acting and a nice mix between British and American flair. Has in its tribute to the screenwriter profession and the old Hollywood its strongest qualities. Besides being simply unapologetically charming and romanic and having a precious, hilarious little cameo by Dustin Hoffman. A perfect film to watch at Christmas time.
After disappointing love lives force Amanda (Diaz) and Iris (Winslet) to take vacations in each others' homes, they are both thrown into life-affirming situations. Amanda meets Iris' brother, Graham ( Jude Law) and falls in love. Iris meets Miles ( Jack Black) and finds a friend who shares her unlucky streak in regards to relationships. While I'm a romantic at heart who occasionally enjoys a predictable love story, I would prefer it if the story were at least somewhat realistic and not quite so nauseating. Jude Law's character, while carrying the charming, humorous nature of Law himself, is written completely nonsensically. He is a widower with two children, incapable of reconciling his dating life with his family life. He is also a self-proclaimed weeper, as is witnessed at the end when Amanda comes back and he's been crying his eyes out. I was rolling mine. Amanda is an annoying character at best, but this could be because she's played by Diaz, the most annoying woman in Hollywood. She's a successful business owner, but a wreck emotionally (we find out later it's daddy issues...how original). With as completely out-of-whack as she is, you sit there going "HUH?!?" when Law's character calls her "the most interesting woman he's ever met". Iris (Winslet) is also a total wreck, but at least being played by a woman with at least a shred of acting ability gave the character SOME depth. Miles (Black) is a good character and honestly, there wasn't enough of him in this film. Law, Winslet, and Black all did excellent jobs in this film despite its horrendous writing, horribly overdone romance, and awkward moments. We are treated to Diaz's singing "skills" (which is actually akin to a whale being tortured), and Winslet plays air guitar in bed. I'm not kidding, air guitar in bed. You can't tell this was written and directed by a woman. And it appears she instructed Winslet and Diaz to emulate retarded 12 years old who'd just experienced their first kiss. There was entirely too much jumping up and down, squealing, and impish naivety. While there were some funny moments, there weren't nearly enough to make up for...everything else. The final scene with all four of them together was just plain weird. There's a lot of giggling, googly eye-balling, vomit-inducing snuggling, whispering, and forced dancing as the characters confirm that their lives are now perfect. Kill me!!! The only reason it's getting that extra half a star is because I thoroughly enjoy watching Kate Winslet and Jude Law in anything. And because Eli Wallach (as the Hollywood veteran who helps Iris find herself) is superb. But even their superior acting skills couldn't save this crap.
Jude was gorgeous, but he always is, in all ways possible. You could even feel a beautiful and sentimental little fatherly vibe going off around the kids. But I agree with that other poster - Cameron Diaz is about as loveable as a sharp rock. She seemed so emotionless and cold. Everything looked like it was stuffing up her day, even the kids, which made me dislike her.
Big thumbs up for Jude who is an amazing actor in his passion and versatility, but big thumbs down for how much Diaz managed to sink the film to something a bit uncomfortable.
Loved that beautiful little cry from Jude!!! Sigh..
amazing movie..
a hoiday like that is just what i need! lol.
actually i exremely relate to kate's character in this movie. every single word that escaped her mouth about love or the things her friends told her is the same with me.
but yet i wanted the guy that cameron had.
very interesting :)
This is a really good movie, Cameron Diaz plays a great part in this movie and Kate Winslet, also Jack Black & the other actor's.
Everything is just awful and is the most sickest thing i've ever seen! And also for making England look so glamourous, this is set in a fantacy land. Bless Kate Winslet for trying to pull this out of the water, but apart from that...IT'S SHITE!!!
An ordinary, simple love story. the acting is good. I love Jude law and so I liked the movie.
Cameron Diaz is about as lovable as a sharp rock. She should never be cast in movies like this; she only makes them annoying.
