The last puissant drop of the strained 'superhero' concept. Dark at times, but Disney fools yet again (One step closer to the ridding of mediocrity, however, with the allowing of kids vs. fatal circumstances). Worth mentioning is the elegant manner that it's told in, reflected with the the characters' advanced technology.
"No gut, no glory"
Directed by Brad Bird, The Incredibles revolves around former high-profile superhero Bob Parr (aka Mr. Incredible), who has not-so-successfully settled into suburban life along with his wife and kids under the watchful eye of the Superhero Protection Program. A far cry from the "glory days" during which "supers" were a welcome addition to society, the Parrs' living situation was brought on after a series of superhero-related lawsuits forced them into hiding. When not trying to fight small-time crime undercover with fellow former superhero Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), Parr (voice by Craig T. Nelson) is muddling through the corporate world as a paunchy, emotionally unsatisfied insurance claims adjuster. His family is like any other with some notable exceptions -- his daughter has the uncanny ability to become invisible and create impenetrable force fields at will; his son, Dash, can run at incredible speeds; his wife, Helen (Holly Hunter), is known in super circles as Elastigirl, one of the most respected (and pliable) superwomen of her time. Just when it looks as if things can't get any worse for Bob, he gets a summons to show up at a remote island to receive instructions for a highly classified assignment, which he promptly accepts. Thrust back into the world of fighting crime, the Incredible family is back in familiar territory -- saving the world from Syndrome, a jilted former fan of Mr. Incredible.
Review
Once again, Pixar animators outdid themselves with this fine film. It is simply amazing that they can keep coming out with such great films.
This is the story of Mr. Incredible, a superhero, that is forced into hiding after being sued for saving someones life. He becomes a regular joe, working at the office, while his superhero wife, Elastigirl, takes care of his two children who also possess incredible superpowers. Mr. Incredible still dreams about being a superhero, and after losing his office job, he is given the chance to once again shine by an unknown supporter. The animation is simply stunning in this film, as we have come to expect from Pixar. The story is brilliant! It will keep you on the edge of your seat, as well as make you laugh out loud during some scenes. The film does borrow quite a bit from the comic books that we have grown up with, "The Fantastic Four" being the most obvious. Comic book fans will love the comparisons.
Overall, a great film for both kids and adults.
Mr. Incredible: No matter how many times you save the world, it always manages to get back in jeopardy again. Sometimes I just want it to stay saved! You know, for a little bit? I feel like the maid; I just cleaned up this mess! Can we keep it clean for... for ten minutes!
Probably the best superhero movie that has no comic book origin. Writer/director Brad Bird has created a great and one of the best Pixar films to date.
It is a film about the world of superheroes, combining the fantastic with the mundane. We see the great things these characters can do, but we also see the other side to the life which adds both humor and drama, both working very effectively.
Lucius: [reminiscing] So now I'm in deep trouble. I mean, one more jolt of this death ray and I'm an epitaph. Somehow I manage to find cover and what does Baron von Ruthless do?
Bob: [laughing] He starts monologuing.
Lucius: He starts monologuing! He starts like, this prepared speech about how *feeble* I am compared to him, how *inevitable* my defeat is, how *the world* *will soon* *be his*, yadda yadda yadda.
Bob: Yammering.
Lucius: Yammering! I mean, the guy has me on a platter and he won't shut up!
Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter both breath life into the characters of Bob and Helen Parr, or Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. Then, you also have Samuel L. Jackson and Jason Lee to make things even better.
The story is pitch perfect. One side shows the mundane family life of a superhero family force to quit their vigilantism. The other side resembles and pays homage to the structures of many classic superhero stories as well as a little bit of Bond, combining loads of action and excitement. It also helps that there is a layer of satire running on top throughout.
Helen: I think your father is in trouble.
Violet: If you haven't noticed, Mom, we're not doin' so hot either.
Further adding to how this film shines is the retro 60s feel it is given in terms of a lot of the art direction and especially the music. Michael Giacinno's score combines great elements of old fashion pulp and Bond-style brassy themes, mixing with the rest of the style of the film.
Henchman: Every time they run, we take a shot!
This film also looks amazing. This is Pixar at a new peak. Being a movie filled with human characters, we see people, that although still given a comic treatment, look like they have real weight and balance in this world. Things like water and hair, and little details are extremely well-handled.
Helen: Of course I have a secret identity. Can you see me in this at the, at the supermarket? Come on! Who'd want to go shopping as Elastigirl, know what I mean?
This is also the most mature of the Pixar films to date. There is plenty of action-violence along with more family drama that comes with the suburban life depicted.
Very entertaining, always a joy to watch.
Old Man #1: Ya see that? That's the way to do it. That's old school.
Old Man #2: Yeah. No school like the old school.
Old Man #1: Right!
Fun for the whole fam
