"Behind every great love is a great story."

Directed by Nick Cassavetes, this adaptation of author Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel revolves around Noah Calhoun's (James Garner) regular visits to a female patron (Gena Rowlands) of an area nursing home. Rather than bore her with the inanities of everyday life, Calhoun reads from an old, faded notebook containing the sweeping account of a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) whose love affair was tragically put to a halt after their separation in the midst of World War II. Seven years later, the couple was reunited, and, despite having taken radically different paths, they found themselves unable to resist the call of a second chance. The Notebook also features Joan Allen, Sam Shepard, and Kevin Connolly.

    Review
I loved this movie, although I was in a heap at the end. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were terrific. I kept seeing a young Jimmy Stewart in Ryan Gosling-his manner, his speech. Rachel shows such great enthusiasm, it is contagious. James Garner and Gena Rowlands are old favorites of mine who always turn in wonderful performances. I always make a point of seeing their movies.

The subject matter is timely and thought-provoking, the music and mood of the young people's story is quite well done. I recommend seeing this movie, if it isn't relevant for you today, it will be one day.

Very well done but suffered from the same fault as all romances do - the plot is revealed within the first three scenes. But enjoyable nonetheless.

okay... dudes... if you put this on when you've got a lady over you're guaranteed a lay! you will get sex that night! on the other side of it though the story was very good and it was told really well. even i (yes, a male) found it extremely engrossing. it probably has something to do with ryan gosling and rachel mcadams and how they were both easily very convincing and believable in their parts! nick cassavetes... the director seems to have pulled a rabbit out of his hat. i don't usually go much on his work but this is more than adept.
