Heartbroken, Buttercup has sworn never to love again, but accepts the marriage proposal of the rich and handsome Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne of Florin; but death is no barrier to true love, and in a story filled with exotically-accented swordsmen, big-hearted giants, genius kidnappers, sadistic torturers, vile swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, the Dread Pirate Roberts and a somewhat embittered miracle worker, the love between Westley and Buttercup twists and turns on a path filled with adventure. Will the True Love of Westley and Buttercup win the day? Will Inigo Montaya find the six-fingered man who murdered his father? Will Humperdinck's evil plans come to fruition? And, more importantly, will Grandpa be able to tell the story without any of the yucky kissing?

The amounts of happiness this movie offered me are unbelievable. Instant classic for me. Unforgettable characters, magical scenes, insanely hilarious dialog. The "true love" story was beautiful and I even adored the cheesy special effects and scenery. Wonderful, amazing! A really great movie that I would probably be ignoring for a long time to come unless a friend of mine suggested it to me -and I truly thank him for that.

Only those who saw The Princess Bride as children can truly understand its real magic and meaning. Those who watched it later, in a time when their innocence and naiveness was gone, won't be able to.

The Dark Crystal, Krull, Legend, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story...

The 80s, for reasons I'm unaware of, saw an explosion of fantasy films, primarily NOT heavily steeped in generic typical fantasy crap (elves, dwarves, dragons, paladins, etc, though occasionally some of these would ALSO be present).

For other reasons I'm also not aware of, people around my age, up and down a couple of years, love these movies. I should probably not criticize since I own most of those (of those listed, there are two I do not own) but I'm not quite so in love with these as those people--commonly females in my experience, but there are males (Hello, Kyle) who do as well.
Still, they exhibit exactly what I am in love with about film in the 80s. They are fully realized and not completely in the clouds, some level of grounding and reality and danger AND a sense of humour, but they aren't fourth wall breaking post modernism either. The film itself, in colouring, sound, everything, tends to look rich, and full, and real--but that little tinge of idealism or fantasy.

    Anyway. I digress. Sorry.

Most of you, if not all (I'd imagine all) have seen this movie. I hadn't seen it in ten years. Like all of these films, and all the ones from my youth (you know the list) it is utterly engaging and has no extra fluff, everything in is either relevant or important plotwise, or the joke works, or whatever emotion is elicited just like it should be. The performances all look just like they should, the villains are villainous, the heroes are heroic, the comic relief is comedic, the thrills are thrilling--essentially I feel that this and a couple of those other movies are, despite their flaws, or perhaps because of them, "perfect."
I don't at all mean literally perfect. The shrieking eels, for instance, are um, slightly not so realistic. But somehow everything just works exactly like it should, and just fits and is entertaining. I really can't describe it anymore than I can describe why I love that strange 80s-ness of such things or other elements of pop culture. I can ramble on about it, as I'm proving right now, but I don't think I can accurately convey it.

Anyway. It's a good movie and we all know it, so fuck it. Let's move on.

The one thing I didn't recall, because at the time I knew nothing about music, is Mark fucking Knopfler did the music. I'm a sucker for a lot of these heart-tugging 80s instrumental ballad-y themes (often even those non-instrumental ones, too, actually...) and Mark's is no exception. Hearing it reminded me of the part of Tangerine Dream's theme that played over the main menu on the Legend DVD. It just hurts in the way that these films tend to do for me; it's a sort of melancholic, pleased sadness. The sort of thing that pulls on your heart, and you can't explain why, but you want more of it, even though it's saddening.

Excuse me, I sound like a total sop right now, but sorry. It's just what these sort of things elicit in me. I'm a sucker, what can I say?

Anyway. The DVD is a pretty solid one (and right after I spoke about MGM DVD deficiencies--but this isn't as old as 12 Angry Men, nor did it get the ULTRA treatment to which I referred, so my point stands). There's a good half hour documentary with retrospective interviews from everyone, and a tribute to Andre in it. There's a short collection of video footage with a modern narration by Cary Elwes with an amusing story about Andre. There are original 80s featurettes (those crappy 7-15 minute backslapping promotional ones) and both a domestic and foreign trailers. Naturally those are cut in 80s style, and when cut with Mark's theme, well, that's what inspired my blubbering "paragraph" above. (2/13/06)
