Christopher Gardner: "It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?"
The rousing, true-life story of a single dad who went from living on the streets to owning his own brokerage firm is brought to the big screen by superstar Will Smith, appearing for the first time opposite his real-life son Jaden Smith. Set in early-'80s San Francisco, the film charts the hard times and eventual comeback of Chris Gardner, a suddenly single salesman who has custody of his son, but finds that providing for the two of them is a challenge in the increasingly unstable economic climate. He struggles to work his way from unpaid intern at Dean Witter to something more substantial, even as life continues to offer him setbacks. Making his Hollywood debut, Italian director Gabriele Muccino was championed by Will Smith for the project.
Review
With any luck, this movie will sadden you, depress you, anger you, make you laugh, and make you ecstatic. This is a great choice for pretty much anyone to watch.
Will Smith plays a man whose life never seems that it can get any worse, until it does. Repeatedly. All that apparently separates him from a beggar on the street, is his unquestionable self-belief, a black suit & tie, and his obvious complete and utter devotion to his son. The movie never really stops to blame anyone, or anything, for this man's misfortune... no matter how frustrating it is. 'Que sera sera', and life carries on. This requires a lot of self-restraint, both on the part of Chris Gardner, and on the part of the viewer.
Realistic? Who knows. It seems to have been based on a true story. This life isn't what most people go through, which is why it is so amazing to watch. This movie will suck you in, and call upon you to feel what Chris Gardner and his son are going through at every moment. Hopefully, you'll be greatly rewarded. I would recommend for anyone to go and see it!
Brilliant!
pretty emotional, good acting. very inspiring
The movie was pretty good.I liked it.Will Smith did a good job.A good movie to watch.
I really expected to hate it, but I just couldn't help but find it rather touching, I'm afraid. Some peoples lives really suck, however I'm not sure why he didn't just get a job at McDonald's or something after his internship at nighttime.
"as it is always that the movie based on true story has a greater impact.so does this but cant overlook the good work by will smith very inspirational nd touchy a must see in my books"
its a very nice movie.. very inspiring.. did you know that in the last scene of the movie, the guy that passed chris and his son is the original chris gardner?.. this story is true.. and now, chris gardner is old, but multi-millionaire.. his son now, is i think, late twenty's.. this really inspires me to do good...
i love this movie my self i have watched over and over will smith is a great actor
gotta agree with "themoreuse". What is this movie supposed to mean? The guy went through all this shit and didn't realize much. He still entered into the machine after seeing throughout the movie that all of this was complete crap and fakeness. Ok acting overall.
Cute Kid, Story seemed a bit incomplete.... Wife?? Anyways...not bad though... :-)
This is a brilliant movie with lots of sadness and sympathy. It's really hard to believe that this actually happens... the deadly secret in the world.
I liked this movie. It is a good example of when you want to get something you do many things to get it
Very much touching, inspiring a lot, moreover...it's not a fiction....increadible!
