I liked this movie, actually, which was...surprising. It was well-made and lowery, the performances satisfactory(personally, best acting job did Jena Malone, Jonathan Tucker and Joe Anderson) and the storyline was audacious. It was disturbing at times, ridiculous at others, but generally, a good horror movie that deserves some attention, especially from the fans of the genre.

A reasonably good horror, and more disturbing (think being queezy from gore) than scary. Acting was excellent, and the storyline was fairly original. Predators come in all shapes and sizes!

Effective horror flick. Many scenes had me on the edge and made my skin crawl. What happened to those people at the ruins keeps running through my mind. The setting and 'monsters' are quite fresh. It was like the "Creepshow 2" Raft segment expanded to feature length goodness. Recommended.

I liked it. Finally a cheesy scary movie that made me queesy. Excellent. The story of course for a scary movie was not Oscar material, but whoever watches these kinda movie and expects miracles is setting themself up for dissapointment anyways. This was original and I was extremely entertained. Finally a "good" scary movie!

Jeff: The police, our parents, the Greeks, somebody. Somebody is going to find us. We just have to be alive when they do.

The Ruins was high on my list for its R rating alone. So much pablum horror has been cranked out by Hollywood lately, any suggestion of intensity is welcome. Four friends vacationing in Mexico take a detour to an ancient site, thanks to a chance encounter. From there things get nasty pretty fast with a few nice shocks. The film follows some standard twists that many horror fans will be familiar with, but it's additions and surprises freshen it up. All of the actors are great at expressing fear and shock. The villain of the piece is pretty unique and was done very well. Some of the scenes are graphic and gory, but have a reason to be there. There are lots of "I was on vacation and got the thrill of my life" horror films out there but this one is different and fun.

Bunged up with hayfever Im not in any doubt that I should fear the plants lol, however the week in movies has just inforced it further.

Dont know what to think of this movie, it was ok I guess, gore factor was quite high for a film about killer plants hahahhaa dont want to spoil it tbh. Id say if your a fan of horror and such give it a go, its a marmite film imo.

The only major downside for me was the plot holes, which you will discover for yourself if you watch it...

Doesn't this just seem like a mix between The Descent and Ringu?

Set deep in the Mexican jungle, a group of American tourists - Jeff (Jonathan Tucker), his girlfriend Amy (Jena Malone), Eric (Shawn Ashmore), and his girlfriend Stacy (Laura Ramsey) - are invited by a brother of German archaeologist named Mathias (Joe Anderson) and his Greek friend Dimitri (Dimitri Baveas) to explore the ruins of an ancient Mayan temple. Things get hairy when local Mayan natives corner off the group, and they are forced to take refuge at the top of the temple. Praying that help will arrive soon and with dwindling supplies, the natives soon set up a perimeter at the base of the temple, threatening to kill them if they try to leave. What they don't know is that the natives are the least of their worries, for something even more terrifying, more horrific, is hiding in plain sight around them. In terms of gore and special effects, much of that doesn't take place until nearly an hour into the picture. When it does come, it allows for some pretty disturbing sights and sounds, as well some genuinely frightening moments. Despite its shortcomings, The Ruins is an absolutely must-see for horror enthusiasts. The only bad thing was that they really didn't go into depth about the temple and why the people there feared it so much.

This movie is actually not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The acting was average, the story was average, but still, it wasn't a complete waste of time.

It had a certain level of intensity to it, and there were some creepy moments. But it seems that when they ran out of intensity, they would just try to show you something extremely gory.

And the gore was very well done, definitely made me cringe a few times. But that's not really enough to carry a movie.

Did a great job of making you feel like they were completely hopeless, that there was no way out for the characters.

I was sort of let down when I found out what the "monster" was. And there's absolutely no explanation as to what it truly is, or where it came from. But then again, who really cares?

It's really just another typical horror movie, where certain people die (you can figure out who's gonna die and live about 10 mins into the movie) in some pretty violent ways.

So if that's what you're in the mood for, you could give this a try.

Four American teens join a German tourist on a back packing trip with a German tourist to a secret Mayan temple that the German tourist?s brother and his brother girlfriend are excavating. Once upon arriving at the temple, the small group is surrounded by locals who force them to stay upon the top of temple. Trapped, hurt, and slowing starving and dehydrating the teens frantically try to figure away off the temple and past the barricade of locals that will not allow them to leave. As he time passes, the group realizes the temple is covered with deadly flowers that are alive and slowly picking them off one by one. Can the group get off the temple and past the barricade? Or are they destined to starve to death and be consumed by the flowers.
The Ruins is a movie that both Hostel and Touristas should have been. Both of those movies were put together sloppy and poorly paced. Granted both had violence in them but both did not place the gore and story correctly. The Ruins has a better cast and a more intelligent script then the previous mentioned movies and with a novice director, the movie overall satisfies the horror audience the movie is aiming for. The Ruins also felt very real in certain aspects that most horror movies don?t have of late. The ruins overall is a good psychological thriller with a decent amount of blood, not completely over done either. The Ruins receives four and half temples out of five fore being a fascinating psychological horror movie.

WTF? I had no idea what this was going to be about before I watched it and when I saw it I was just like....Really?....Vines? I did like the scenes between the characters and thought that for a movie like this they were fairly well developed. If there was a different antagonist they might have made for a pretty good movie but vines?

I don't even know where to begin with this movie. It had some gory scenes, but that was about it. I will have to say though the people watching / protecting the ruins was no joke.

Oh god we have a winner. Best horror movie of 2008. And so underrated, it almost didn't reach Italy.

    er, what?

    sometimes, there is only one thing I can say about some things and this is one case where it is applicable;
    this is Pap.

The premise is stupid, the protagonaists are stupid and nothing makes sense.
At every turn, you are left wondering "why didn't they just...?" to the point that this is turned into a farce.

No merit what-so-ever and if you like this sort of horror film, there are better.

Watchably brief plant horror which reflects well on its literary roots (no pun intended). Played admirably straight, it creates a tense creepy atmosphere.

I enjoyed this,it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but as a horror movie,it was quite effective. I found myself itching all over once it had finished. It's very gory in places, and you have to leave your brain at the front door. Don't start analyzing it,trying to make sense of it all,it will get you nowhere fast and you will end up with a headache. Just think of it as a dumb horror B movie, and enjoy watching the stupid kids die.

Before seeing this film, I thought maybe some kind of creature or something was down in "The Ruins", but I was wrong.
I still enjoyed the story line. The film did have some good gorey moments in it for the horror lovers out there.

A good mix of psychological thriller and old-school style monster movie chiller.

Suspensful, gory and creepy! While "The Ruins" isn't the best horror flick I've seen recently, it is a really decent one and does deliver some good unexpected scares that gets under your skin and makes it crawl.

"The Ruins" will certainly hold your attention for its 1 1/2 hour runtime. A solid shocking chiller with good effects and an interesting premise.

And I'll never feel the same way about a ringing cellphone again.

Disfruté mucho esta película, de verdad tiene momentos intensos y es original. Lo de la planta maldita tal vez pude parecer tonto, pero en esta película sí funciona bien, no como en otras... (lease The Happening )
