Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) finds trouble in her sleepy Kansas town when her dog Toto soils the garden of town tycoon, Miss Gulch (Margaret Hamilton). Miss Gulch gets a legal order to seize Toto, but the dog escapes back to Dorothy. With a great deal of guilt, she decides to run away, but returns before a twister destroys her home. She is transported into another world where she meets a lion without courage (Bert Lahr), a scarecrow without a brain (Ray Bolger) and a tin man without a heart (Jack Haley). They all start a quest to find a magical emperor that will give them all they want. The film perfectly integrated the musical numbers with the action of the plot, enhancing and advancing the suspenseful narrative. The visuals are simply amazing, to this day. You've got outstanding set and production designs, and just watching the transition from the sepia tones Dorothy tolerates in Kansas to full-blown Technicolor of Oz. The actors have a conviction of their own that propels the story right up past its fuzzy pre-adolescent sentiments with a wholehearted boldness. The film has a boisterous energy that it is hard not to be caught up in, even despite the relative corniness of some of it. The Wizard of Oz is a film that is steeped in such classic status that the story surrounding it has become the stuff of legend, even urban legend. The Wizard of Oz remains not just a classic film, but a beloved one as well.
I have an uncontrolable hate towards this movie it just can never get on my good side.
One of my favorite movies of all time, I've loved this movie since the first saw it when I was 4.
Judy Garland was magical here. This is a career climax for any star, when you can not possibly improve on or act in anything that would remotely be as successful and has entrenched in the culture of the world. This was a trully cinamatic triumoph, effects were amazing from the time, anyone who watches it becomes totally immersed in its plot, and amazing set design. This movie defines the word escape as it really does take the mind to a different place. An essential for any DVD collection.

THE MOVIE OUTLINE
"When a nasty neighbor tries to have her dog put to sleep, Dorothy takes her dog Toto, to run away. A cyclone appears and carries her to the magical land of Oz. Wishing to return, she begins to travel to the Emerald City where a great wizard lives. On her way she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who desperately needs courage. They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them, before the Wicked Witch of the West catches up with them."
MY APPRAISAL
A TOP NOTCH MILESTONE OF A FILM.
Now I am actually speechless. The Wizard of Oz is definitely the kind of story that remains in our hearts and like they said, TIME has been powerless to put this amazing tale out of fashion. I know all of you have watched this one, maybe ages ago. But when you rewatch this, it's like you found a "long lost you" and start to reminisce the beauty of childhood. The soothing songs alongside the movie are truly enchanting, takes you to a journey of enchantment you never had.
ONE OF THE MOST MIND-BOGGLING STORY EVER TOLD.
"There's a land that I heard of, once in a lullaby."
-DOROTHY-
I've read all the books, and even though it takes liberties with a few things, I still love it. In this most well-known adaptation, the special effects for the time, the technicolor, the quotable lines, and the simple values of brain, heart, courage, and home are what make it great. It'll always be my favorite!
This movie is still great to watch and it's nearly a hundred years old? That's when you know it's a timeless story
It is in a very real sense a different movie all its own and it has become known as "Dark Side of the Rainbow" and quite literally the rating that I have given to this movie is much more for Dark Side of the Rainbow & only a crumb of the whole rating belongs to The Wizard of Oz. The movie by itself & on its own, however, I find to be to long, boring, and just a general waste of my time. From what I understand the runtime for this movie was about 101 minutes & 112 minutes for the US version. Well, this movie must've been exceptionally terrible, since I remember falling asleep during the movie, wondering why it was such a long and terrible movie, desperately wanting it to be over!
I developed a new found respect for this movie when it became known that Pink Floyd adapted their album "Dark Side of the Moon" as a soundtrack for this movie. In a sense, this album adapted to this movie changes this movie and makes it more poignant and imaginative than the movie, or its creators, could ever have hoped that it would be on it's own. Pink Floyd has never admitted to doing such a thing except for perhaps, in a way, Roger, who stays quiet when asked.
I have probably watched this movie at least once for every year of my life and a few times in between. I saw it not so much as dark but as there is hope if you look inside yourself. I most recently saw this movie in the theater which made me see things in it that I had not seen before. It's a classic for all time and "Over the Rainbow" is probably one of the best loved classic songs ever. I never tire of seeing the Wizard of Oz.
HAHAHA I have the Return to Oz movie and its not scary atall its weird but in a cute way. I love the wizard of oz movie, and the return to oz movie is ok but I would not recommend it to children under the age of 5. But other than that I love both movies
My mom told me that there is a remake called "the Wiz" starring Micheal Jackson, im scared to see it plus this movie is too good for remakes.
DID U KNOW THERES A SECOND 1 OF WIZARD OF OZ ITS CALEED RETURN TO OZ AND DOROTHY IS YOUNGER AND ALL THE CHARCTERS ARE DIFFERENT AND I DONT RECOMEND IT ITS SCARY....THIS LADY HAS A WHOLE ROOM FULL OF HEADS IN WHICH SHE CHANGES THEM SO SHE CAN HAVE A DIFFRENT HEAD ECH TIME...EEEWWW
The Nelson farm in MN has a wizard of oz theme so cool the corn maze is emerold city and the tin man
I love this film. “Over the Rainbow” is my favorite song in this film. Every time I see this movie, I get emotional right before she sings it. I remember as a child how I use to be totally amazed when Dorothy walked outside and everything turned from black and white to full color. It was a very pleasant memory that I hold on to every time I see this movie as well. I remember how the witch use to scare me as a kid, but now I laugh at that and realize how foolish it was to be scared of her. I feel in love with the Cowardly Lion. He was my favorite character. I always recite his little song/speech he says with him, when they are outside waiting to speak to The Wizard Of Oz.
“If I were king of the fore-e-e-est
Not queen, not duke, not prince
My royal robes of the fore-e-e-est
Would be satin, not cotton, not chintz
I'd command each thing, whether fish or fowl
With a r-r-ruff and a r-r-ruff, and a royal growl - R-R-Ruff!
As I click my heels
All the trees would kneel
And the mountains bow
And the bulls kowtow
And the sparrow would take wing
If I, if I were ki-i-i-i-ng!
The rabbits would show respect to me
The chipmunks genuflect to me
Though my tail would lash
I would show compash
For every underling
If I, if I were king
Just ki-i-i-i-ing!”
This movie is truly magical, and it makes me feel like a kid again and again, every time I see it!
