This movie was stupid to me as an 8-year-old. Now I think it's absolutely hilarious.
[Leo is strapping a bomb to Bob]
Dr. Leo Marvin: "This is black powder, Bob. A teaspoon of it can blow up a tree stump.
Bob Wiley: How much you got there?
Dr. Leo Marvin: Twenty pounds.
Dr. Leo Marvin: You understand, right? There's no other solution. You won't go away.
Bob Wiley: Yes, I will.
Dr. Leo Marvin: No, you won't. You're just saying you will, so that when I don't kill you, you'll show up again and make everyone else in my life think you are wonderful and I'm a schmuck. But I'm not a schmuck, Bob, and I'm not going to let you breeze into town and steal my family away just because you're crazy enough to be fun. "
Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) is at the pinnacle of his psychiatry career. His new book, Baby Steps, is such a huge success that Good Morning America's crew is coming to interview him while he's on vacation with his family at Lake Winnipesaukee. The day before he leaves, however, he meets a new patient,Bob Wiley (Bill Murray),who's about to change everything. Bob, in his own words, has problems. He's afraid of pretty much everything. But in just one session with Dr. Marvin, he realizes that he's finally found the man who can help him. So when Dr. Marvin announces that he'll be away until the end of the summer, Bob is beside himself. So, following the advice found in Dr. Marvin's life-changing book, Bob sets out to find his doctor back. When Bob shows up at Lake Winnipesaukee, Leo is horrified. Everyone else in the family, however, takes an instant liking to Bob and they welcome him into their home. He helps Leo's wife, Fay (Julie Hagerty), with the dishes, he learns how to sail with Leo's daughter, Anna (Kathryn Erbe), and he teaches Leo's son, Siggy (Charlie Korsmo), to dive. The longer Bob stays, the more Leo's family loves him and the more Leo tries to get rid of him using any method that works. But like the cat in the famous song, Bob just keeps coming back. It's side-aching, belly-laughing hilarious without being crude or offensive. The role of "Bob" seems almost tailor made for Bill Murray, and director Frank Oz clearly had a grasp on how to pull out of Murray a performance capturing the heart, soul and humor of the character.
good.weird,wasn't bad,got some good laughs.
This movie was supposed to be funny but it got on my nerves. If this had been real life, the shrink would have had Bob put in jail for stalking him.
One that deserves to be rewatched and enjoyed.
Funny parts, even tho it kind of pissed me out sometimes. Predictable, but not entirely. Murray was pretty great. And after all, a true story ^_^
saw most of this movie but missed the end!!
