i may be alone, but gene wilder bums me out.
A musical drug trip that's appealing to kids and adults (Although, a bit more appropriate for adults). The remake is more accurate to the novel, but this one reigns with superiority.
Charlie Bucket: Mr. Wonka, they won't really be burned in the furnace, will they?
Willy Wonka: Well, I think that furnace is only lit every other day, so they have a good sporting chance, haven't they?
A poor lad wins the chance of a life time to tour the most eccentric and wonderful Sweet factory in the world.
Gene Wilder: Willy Wonka
Jack Albertson: Grandpa Joe
Peter Ostrum: Charlie
"Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" is another one of those films of the late-1960s and early-1970s that killed the Hollywood musical.
The film is long, tedious, and disjointed in too many areas to be a success unless were all spoon fed block heads of course. Gene Wilder stars as the titled character and he invites five kids to visit his famous factory after they find lucky tickets in their candy bars. Sounds great, yes.
Of course all the kids, but one, are total brats and the film tries to convey messages on how to rear children to be outstanding adults, being sadly diluted.
That is about it for the start of a sorry screenplay. The direction is poor also. This is a good-looking film though as the production values are extremely high it's flat between the lines.
Jack Albertson is priceless. He almost makes the film succeed all by himself, but not quite enough sadly.
''There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There's no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the river's flowing.''
I will tell you what avid readers...I do not know where this film is going, the bin or the inferno, this line sums it up.
This rubbish makes me wish that the damn 70s was banished from existence with it's disgusting style and gaudish tacky fashion.
Oompa Loompa's(yuck!), Willy Wonka(camp!) and Charlie(wimpish!) look like freaky apparitions out of a 70s horror show.
Everyone may love this but i hate it, it's an insult to the book and thank god they remade it! Poor poor Roald Dahl hated it too, i wish he could have seen the remake...
some what interesting,somewhat dumb.
What can I say? It's a classic! Timeless film that is just a blast to watch. Gene Wilder is so great in this. Unforgettable soundtrack; my favorite is "Pure Imagination". Love it! Used to watch this on a weekly basis.
Enter a world full of imagination and chocolate. Watch Roald Dahl's novel come to life accompanied by an irreplaceable performance from Gene Wilder. It's every kids dream come true.
i really like this movie.. and i expected a lot from the re-make.. but this was still much better.. johnny depp's a scary willy wonka.. creepy.. really.. but the gene wilder version was friendly and more fun.. the new one just compensated with the effects and all.. the old version made me believe that there's really a magical factory.. really nice.. nostalgic. haha!
“Hold your breath.
Make a wish.
Count to three.
Come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination”
I remember when I read the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 5th grade. It was the most enjoyable book that I have ever read. Do you know how excited my entire class was, when our teacher told us that there was a movie based on the book. We almost died! Yes, my first time seeing this movie was at school. I loved every minute of it. The movie was full of magic, excitement, and wonder - without all of the Hollywood glitz, glamour and computer graphics. And Charlie. … Oh, Charlie! How I love this little boy. He was so innocent, kind, and honest. Something a lot of us can never be. He was a poor, humble, responsible little boy who loved his family and actually had a job to help out. He was a sweet-heart. And his one dream in life was to find one of those golden tickets. When I was a kid I thought this movie was so sweet, fun and exciting. Now, that I’m older I realized that the movie is quite funny as well. I mean, seriously! Willa Wonka was a maniac! He was truly crazy. I think that he might have been on some serious illegal narcotics! And that guy that would go around whispering in the children’s ears, after they found a ticket… He was so creepy! The Oompa Loompa Songs cracked me up, because they were true and catchy. And lets not forget all the crazy things people were doing to get a golden ticket! Yeah, this movie is heart-warming, magical, really funny, and quite entertaining. It is a classic I hold dear to my heart!
the first one was better!!!!!!!!!!!!it stinks like cheese!!!!!!!!! ive never smelled cheese but it stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the greatest films of 1971 and it shows in stunning detail.
The classic Jack Albertson number "I Got A Golden Ticket" is uplifting indeed.
