''Mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward.''
Two mutants come to a private academy for mutants whose resident superhero team must oppose a powerful mutant terrorist organization.
Hugh Jackman: Logan / Wolverine
X-Men equals a tantalizing story revolving around the activities of mutants. A hugely uplifting smash hit franchise for Marvel Comics.
Director Bryan Singer, the genius behind The Usual Suspects, and screenplay writer David Hayter, yes the voice of Solid Snake out of my fave game series Metal Gear, have adapted this comic adapt for the screen.
X-men goes right to the heart of prejudice and our continuing reluctance to deal with those who are different from us, either by race, by gender, by age or anyone remotely unfitting for stereotypicalized society.
The plot taps into the vein of feelings we have about diversity, tolerance, and exclusivity. And, let's admit it at one time or another we have all felt like a mutant outsider, that we can't relate to the public.
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine plays a unique and pivotal lead in a cast of many. Also gets across the whole outsider and loner characteristics that make Logan's personality and shows Wolverine with a gruff sense of humour.
Anna Paquin from The Piano, also plays Rogue with the same approach as Hugh Jackman does. A character who is a loner and outsider not by choice but by her mutation, her curse or gift of not being able to touch anyone.
Ian McKellan is also superb as the tortured master of magnetism, Magneto, playing the part with delicious villainy and dark humour, hammered with an extreme form of faith for his cause of the uprising of mutants to rule over normal people.
His Brotherhood of Mutants is composed of Sabretooth, viciously a beast like portrayal by Tyler Mane, The Phantom Menace's Ray Park is the wickedly amusing Toad, and the beautiful Rebecca Romaijn-Stamos is the shape-shifting sexy Mystique. Park actually had the most to say of Magneto's henchmen, but it was appropriate as these three compile a wicked team of badness and not philosophy like their leader does.
On the good side we get fine performances from Halle Berry as Storm, James Marsden as Cyclops, Famke Janssen as Dr Jean Grey, and the wise telekinetic Dr Xavier played by Patrick Stewart. Hence the name X-men.
A wonderful scene for me is the Statue of Liberty where Wolverine fights Sabre tooth, Bryan Singer obviously has his eyes set on a Superman film. Also Magneto's encounter with the police turning their weapons against them was a pure formed example of Blockbuster Comic entertainment. Awesome.
The productions values in X-Men were spectacular, as were the settings, taking us from a stark, malign concentration camp in Poland to the wilds of the Canadian north to the serenity of Westchester, New York to a mind-bending climax on Liberty Island. The action sequences were well-paced and packed, and much more smoother and better choreographed than any of the original Batman films. The special effects, especially Wolverine's legendary adamantium claws, were truly awe-inspiring.
X-Men was meticulously directed by Bryan Singer, who along with 20th Century Fox, actually listened to and cared about what X-Fans thought and wished to see on screen. Although we would have all liked to have stayed in that world for more than an hour and twenty five minutes, there are many more stories to come with X-men.
By all the powers that be, Fox plus Marvel, not to mention Bryan Singer vision, made X-2 happen next.
it's either a genetic predisposition, or possibly a character flaw, but i just can't get into comic book adaptation. meh.
I usually mess up the sequence of watching movies... I watched the second first, the third second, and the first last, lol.
As soon as I saw the opening scene at the concentration camp and the tattoo on Magneto's arm, I REALLY undestood why he hated humans so much... Gave him more of a reason to be so hateful than just "evil genius".
I really like Rogue, even if the last little bit dragged for me. Nothing to do with the movie, I was just tired of sitting and watching. Wolverine is funny and despite his tough guy attitude, really softens. I like how... pardon the wording... but how human all of the characters are, not just carbon copies of each other.
There isn't a whole lot new to say on any of the X-Men movies. They are all really good.
On of the first good Superhero movies.
I <3 Wolverine :)
I like superheroes with powers and all the things they come up with, and yeah, I'm simple so it's nice.
Awsome movie! Different than the comics, but still it has its escence!
Hugh grants as Wolverine is just perfect!
Hale Berry as Storm is great!
