Michael Caine Says He’s Ready For A Batsuit Of His Own

Almost everyone in Batman gets an origin story of some sort — so what about Alfie? Michael Caine, who says he’s never read the comics about the faithful valet or the Caped Crusader he worked for, came up with one of his own, just so that he could understand the character better.

“I made him a sergeant in the Special Air Services, the SAS, in the British army,” Caine said. “He got wounded, but he didn’t want to leave the army, so he went to work in the officer’s mess, in the canteen, which is where he learned how to do cocktails and mixed drinks and cook. Thomas Wayne went back and there and saw him, which is how he got hired.”

Not too far off the mark — in one version, Alfred Pennyworth was a combat physician in the Royal Air Force, and later became a special operative to Her Majesty’s Secret Service, until he was hired away from the royal family by Bruce Wayne’s father. “I never knew any of that!” Caine laughed. “I just went ahead and came up with my own. At first I was thinking, ‘Well, he’s the butler, he’s not very important.’ But once I read the script and saw that they made him important, that he was Batman’s conscience, then I was interested.”

Caine’s got an idea to make Alfred even more important — let the butler dress up as Batman, as a decoy, so that Bruce Wayne can be spotted in one place, and Batman in another. “I won’t fit in Christian [Bale]’s uniform,” Caine admitted. “They’ll have to make a special one for me.”

“Hey, it’s possible,” smiled David Goyer, who came up with “The Dark Knight” story with Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. “I’m not going to give anything away, but that would be cute.”

Do you want to see Michael Caine as Batman? Should the filmmakers give Alfred more to do in the next one? Chime in below.

Michael Caine is always joking around and it would be a laugh to see him in a batsuit, so why not? go ahead and give him one for the third movie. Alfred has become so popular now Michael has taken over, he should get a bigger part!

they also did it in a book and in the comics, when bane broke his back. that was an awesome book, and an awesome story arc for the comics.

This was done once on the animated series The Batman. Alfred dressed as Batman to throw away suspicion from the Penguin who thought that he had deducted Batman's identity.
