Caine unsure over 'Batman' future

Sir Michael Caine has claimed that Batman producers may be unable to top the success of The Dark Knight.

The actor, who plays Alfred Pennyworth in the movie, spoke after learning that the sequel had broken the opening weekend box office record in the US.

"I think this one will be such a success it will be difficult to do a sequel because we've done one and we've topped it, obviously, and now we've got to top this," Caine told WENN. "That is difficult. That is difficult because we've already broken the box office [record] in American movie history. We've got to break our own record. It's hard."

He added: "This is something. It's not just the best Batman but it's one of the best movies. It really is."

The movie's co-writer David Goyer recently admitted that the prospect of making another sequel is "scary".

Of course they'll make another batman film, I'm just saying The Dark Knight could very well be the end of the Nolan series. It's inevitable that they'll start a new series one time or another. It may not happen soon, but it will eventually happen, with or without nolan. The film industry is all about money. If it makes money, they'll make it. But, with the Dark Knight, they really put effort into that. They made it for more than just money. They tried to re-imagine batman, and the result was a masterpiece.

And, to "Theohiostateguy," I agree. I loved the wargames storyline, and I think that prospect of making a film based on that storyline could result in a film that could top even the Dark Knight.

As I said before, besides topping the film, shouldn't it be a strong individual film? A film on its own league. I do believe the next film is so so so difficult to top but besides always trying to top a movie, why not give it its own league, its own universe that this movie only had because there is a vast difference between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight but they are still well-written superhero works that are liked both for various reasons.

I understand what they're getting at, because it's the third movie and they don't want to ruin it. Like if Dark Knight was on par with Godfather II, the LAST thing you'd want is a Godfather III, or worst, a Spider-Man 3. They don't have to be afraid to top anything--I can settle for equal, just not less.

Warner Bros. will definitely make another Batman movie. Whether Christopher Nolan and company will be involved, I don't know. I hope that the same people come back, because they've done a really great job with "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight". However, if they do all walk away, then Warner Bros. will simply solicit new talent for the making of a third film, rather than let this cash cow rest.

Randallraines wrote..."The idea of a plot of Batman as a fugitive is quite interesting."

Indeed it is. It's been done though. Read the "Wargames" storyline that ran through the Batman titles a few years back.

It was quite good, and it's available in trade paperback.

The comic industry often times has this same situation. How do you top the previous blockbuster story? You just write the best story you can, and let the fans/readers/viewers decide.
