HEATH LEDGER deserves all the credit for THE DARK KNIGHT's massive box office haul, according to the movie's director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN.

Ledger plays The Joker in the movie, the last full film role he completed before his death in January (08) from an accidental drug overdose. And Nolan insists Ledger made the movie a hit.

Speaking at The Dark Knight's Japanese premiere on Monday (28Jul08), the British filmmaker said, "(He was) what The Joker in our film would need to be.

"(We were) looking for an actor with the fierceness, excitement and teeth to do our version of the Joker."

Christian Bale, who plays Batman in the record-breaking film, also found time to praise Ledger, telling a press conference, "It's satisfying to see people celebrating the incredible talent of Heath. I just want him to be recognised."

In just 10 days since the film's release in America, The Dark Knight has taken an astonishing $440 million (GBP150 million) at movie theatres worldwide, breaking almost every box office record in the U.S.

    Heath Ledger is SO hot, I gotta marry him in heaven!!! I saw this movie twice, and I STILL find it to be the best movie ever created in movie-making history! What kind of idiot would die of boredom in this movie??? (he's obviously an a-hole!!!)

    wow that movie is probably my favorite movie ever!! no one could ever play the joker anywhere near how well heath ledger did! i think out of all his movies this one could be his best! i tried going to this movie the night it came out, the night after that, and the next 3 nights of that week, and it was soled out every time! finally got to see it and WOW AMAZING! very well done everyone!

    yes i agree with posted comments on the movie the dark knight ,its was clearly heaths finest moment he reall lived the joker,he was the joker always will be ,he made the mmovie what it was ,i went to see it because it was him and his last movie before his death ,the part he played was fantastic i came away feeling wow that was dark ,just what he wanted to show ,congratulations heath you did it ,its a shame and a great lose you die doing it ,i also agree with other comments the joke should remind heaths and be retired from the movie how could their even be another joker,and he should be honoured his last stand with the oscar ,he lost his life with this movie ,your one of a kind good luck heath with your next journey ,,

    Heath is and i believe always will be The Joker, He made the Joker his with a little help from the original (Jack Nicholson) the way he played him was just outstanding, he managed to bring the old one back to current day with the way he speaks but with added madness!! In my mind there will never be another Joker, i also feel that the Joker should be laid to rest in his honour. yes i am just one of billions of people but everyone is open to have there view. Long live the Joker an Mr Ledgers memory.

    Heath Ledger made The Dark Knight a brilliant movie, without him it would'nt have been the same. I hope he gets the oscar he deserves.It's just a shame he's not here to pick it up :(

    he was sort smacking/licking his lips, like a deranged street animal; but yea, he took over the screen & stole the show definitely; his performance actually makes you forget he's ledger & that he really is the joker; i think he half won though: he underestimated the people of gotham but he turned the white night into a murderous killer
