Will Ferrell’s ‘Sherlock’ Comedy Stays True To Book, Will Draw On Original Stories

It’s elementary, my dear Watsons. Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are starring in a Sherlock Holmes movie together. Baron Cohen and Ferrell are known for their comedic talents. Their Sherlock Holmes will therefore eschew a real mystery plot, and simply focus on the laughs. Simple deduction!

Except it’s not at all true, “Holmes” screenwriter Etan Cohen insisted, telling MTV News that he prefers to have his pipe and smoke it too.

“What’s been exciting is to do a giant comedy but at the same time try to be true to the mechanics of a Sherlock Holmes story like using the Victorian forensics that Conan Doyle used,” Cohen said. “It’s a cool opportunity to write a good mystery that also gets to be a giant comedy. Fortunately a lot of the stories are public domain now. We can actually draw on a lot of the situations and language of many of the original stories.”

Could it be, then, that of the two competing Holmes movies, the one starring the guy who played Borat is actually MORE faithful to the character’s origin than the one starring Robert Downey Jr.? It will be if Cohen has anything to say about it.

“Looking around my desk [I have] books about Victorian forensics, all the stories, and dictionaries for Victorian slang,” he laughed. “It looks like I’m writing a bad senior thesis on Sherlock Holmes.”

(Guy Ritchie previously gave up the goose on his version, which will be heavily action oriented. You can read all about it here.)

So one’s an action film, the other a comedy. But the great mystery is: which one are you most looking forward to? Sound off on your thoughts below.
