DreamWorks' big-budget comedy "Tropic Thunder" topped the weekend box office in grossing an estimated $26 million from 3,319 theaters for a five-day opening total of $37 million.

Warner Bros' Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" also was victorious in officially becoming the second highest grossing pic of all time domestically, surpassing the original "Star Wars." For the weekend, "Dark Knight" grossed an estimated $16.8 million from 3,590 runs for a total of $471.5 million in just 30 days.

Warner Bros took the No. 2 spot with "Dark Knight and the No. 3 spot with George Lucas' animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which opened to an estimated $15.5 million from 3,452 runs.

Among other new openings, the R-rated "Mirrors" took advantage of being the only horror pic in the market, coming in No. 4 and debuting to an estimated $11.1 million from 2,664 runs.

Woody Allen pic "Vicky Cristinia Barcelona," bowing on 692 screens placed No. 10 for the weekend in grossing an estimated $3.7 million for a per screen average of $5,361.

The 3-D toon "Fly Me to the Moon" wasn't able to crack the top 10 in its bow, hampered by holdover 3-D film "Journey to the Center of the Earth." "Moon" opened to an estimated $2 million from 452 screens, coming in behind "Journey," which grossed an estimated $3.5 million from 1,405 screens for a total of $88.1 million in its sixth week.

TITANIC triumphs... knew it would. It would have been a long shot for Dark Knight to actually beat it outright. But never the less it put up a good fight. HAA-HEE-HAA-HEE-HAA-HAA!

I am very happy the The Dark Knight has gotten up to number two. But I still have hope that it will continue to scoot its way up and pass Titanic.

As for Oscars, I believe Heath Ledger will get the nomination and probably the win. I think it's also a possibility that Christopher Nolan will be nominated as well. And I think he would deserve it (and not just because this hasn't been the greatest year for Oscar worthy films, but that fact certainly doesn't hurt). I love it that this comic based and summer blockbuster film has made its way into the Oscar talk. And it is a film, not a movie.

As for Titanic...well, I enjoy watching it from time to time. I'll turn it on for a while when I catch it on TV (because I don't own it nor do I really care to). But I find myself laughing at some moments that aren't supposed to be laughed at. I don't agree with all of the Oscars it won. Was Titanic's year worse than some of the movie years we have seen recently?

Haha, I laugh at Fly me to the moon!! Most of the bombs at the box office this year use lots of computer animation.

Congratulations for The Dark Knight, for finally ranking at number 2 in just 30 days, and to me, that's absolutely an amazing achievement for a movie. Maybe, still far away to sink down the sinking ship movie, but, hey it's still good, ain't it?

Therefore, it's highly recommended that Heath Ledger should be given the Oscar because the movie's success is largely contributed by his second to none performance.Again, in my entire life, I have never seen such an incredible act of the Joker portrayed by Mr Ledger, and honestly, I don't even think anyone else can outdone what he did for the movie. So sad, he's gone and can't be with us to celebrate glorious victory.

    RIP Heath Ledger

I've seen Titanic, and you have to like romantic dramas in order to even understand it. But that wasn't the real reason for me seeing it. Since the seventh grade I've been interested in the ill-fated ship. But there has been people who have seen it like 15 some odd times. As for Oscars well Titanic was an overall good movie, that deserved alot of those awards. As for Batman, the only major award I see is Actor in a Supporting Role. For Heath was fantastic. Anything else well, we have to wait and see in Feb of 2009.

It is ridiculous 'The Titanic' is the highest grossing movie ever! It was so boring, considering oscars were given to it - ofcourse it would be, but seriously I bet Heath won't even get nominated, it's sickening. A good actor is when they can play someone who they don't resemble at all, and Heath took on that character so well and I havent seen one performance in my lifetime that comes close to what Heath did. I can see actors, directors etc not turning up if he is not nominated and you can imagine the audience numbers. I watched it last year and they had some girl sing from a musical, I think it was 'Enchanted', no one wants to see that, they want to see top selling artists like Justin and actually bring some life to the show, even if it is one performance. Back to Heath, many actors would agree he has done something they could never do, and he should be rewarded for this. Not only him but the film also, second highest grossing movie ever, first got 11 oscars, why shouldn't this!?!?
