Britney Spears will not play a crazed lesbian stripper in a new horror movie.
The singer was said to be starring in a remake of 1965 cult film Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! directed by Quentin Tarantino.
But her rep insists this isn’t the case.
‘Though she definitely intends to explore acting roles down the road, right now she’s concentrating on recording her next album,’ her spokesman tells Access Hollywood.
Earlier this year, Brit, 26, was praised for her role in US sitcom How I Met Your Mother. |

"I left the hospital today just after 12 noon, Memphis time," Freeman said in a statement released by his rep to PEOPLE. "I'm doing very well. I feel real good. I just really, I thank the staff at 'Elvis Presley [Hospital]' and many, many thanks to my many well-wishers. It's great to know people care about you.”

Tila Tequila, whose bisexual reality dating series premieres on MTV next week, recently exposed her personal spiritual journey on how she found God.
Her testimony was posted last week on her popular MySpace blog in reaction to conservative Christian comments opposing the upcoming show – "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" – where she stars with 32 straight men and lesbians who compete to impress her.
Although acknowledging that the show would raise controversy, she wrote, "I just want to say that I am truly blessed to have had an opportunity to share with the world and teach the world that it is OK to be who you are! Gay or not! So thank you MTV for giving me this opportunity."
Tequila, whose real last name is Nguyen, has some 2 million "friends" on MySpace, making her the most popular girl in the social network's history and earning her the label "queen of MySpace." She's also dubbed the "Madonna of MySpace" as she built her celebrity status online with racy photos and videos... |

Former Bond girl Denise Richards' reality show is facing the axe because of falling viewer figures, according to reports.
Denise Richards: It's Complicated launched on U.S. network E! earlier this year (08) and was an instant hit, allowing viewers a sneak peak into the actress' life with her two daughters with ex-husband Charlie Sheen.
But sources claim the way she handled her public battle with Sheen over custody of three year old Lola and Sam, two, has turned viewers off.
An insider tells America's Star magazine, "The numbers started out pretty good - just over 1.5 million tuned into the premiere episode. But the audience has dropped off. Denise has turned into an unappealing reality star."
Richards' bad language on the programme has also angered the public.
The source adds, "Viewers were disgusted that a mother of two young girls would use such foul language." |

Lindsay Lohan's father Michael has branded TV journalist Anderson Cooper a "hypocritical idiot" after becoming involved in a war of words between his ex-wife Dina and the news anchor.
Celebrated CNN reporter Cooper took a swipe at the Mean Girls star's younger sister Ali while hosting live morning show Live with Regis & Kelly on Tuesday. The journalist branded Ali and Dina's reality show, Living Lohan, a "train wreck", before comparing the 14-year-old to a 60-year-old and a "striptease person".
The comments infuriated mom Dina, who hit back at Cooper in OK! Magazine, warning, "People are just cruel! This is bad karma for him." And now the teen's dad Michael has also lashed out at the TV reporter, insisting he has no right to pass judgment on the Lohan family.
He tells Access Hollywood, "I think Anderson Cooper is an opinionated, hypocritical idiot who should be an adult and keep his opinion to himself. He is the last person to judge anyone, when he and his own family have their... |

The Olympics and a weak film slate may crimp Blockbuster Inc (BBI.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) revenues in the third quarter, Chief Executive Jim Keyes told Reuters on Thursday.
But the company's shift to products beyond movie rentals is paying off and should help offset seasonal and other pressures, he said in an interview.
"We are not expecting (same-store sales) this quarter to be probably as high as the second quarter," said Keyes, noting the start-up of the Olympics this week and a weak movie slate should make August the biggest challenge of the quarter.
Same-store rental revenues rose 6.5 percent in the second quarter.
But Keyes, who wants to reposition Blockbuster to compete in a world where viewers download videos or receive them by mail, was "optimistic" it will achieve better comparisons as it stocks shelves with more new releases, games and consumer electronics. |

James Franco Teases A Possible ‘Superbad’/'Pineapple Express’ Crossover |

It’s the buzzword of 2008: Cross-pollination. And it’s all the rage these days thanks to Marvel’s ambitious slate, which already included Nick Fury showing up in “Iron Man” and Tony Stark showing up in “The Incredible Hulk.” So if comics can get away with it, why not Judd Apatow?
We’re actually not joking. Combining Apatow’s comedies isn’t just a good idea, it’s an idea whose time very well may come soon, “Pineapple Express” star James Franco told MTV News.
When asked about the possibility of a “Pineapple Express” sequel, Franco said that not only has it been discussed, it’s about to get some real McLovin.
“Even before ‘Superbad’ came out, I think the studio was trying to get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to write a sequel, but they really didn’t want to write a sequel. I guess the kids would go to college or something like that [that was the studio's idea],” Franco said. “And so, an answer to that was to do a ‘Superbad’/'Pineapple Express’ crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.”
Rogen himself has stated that he’d be interested in a “Pineapple” sequel. But how would he combine the two universes? Just ask Franco.
“I could sell them [the characters from 'Superbad'] something, but I think we’d want some action, so you know, somehow the kids get in trouble somehow and we have to get them out of it,” Franco mused. “And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we’d have to kill one of them off.”
And Franco’s character Saul? The drug dealing, pot smoking, hippie based at least in part on Brad Pitt’s performance in “True Romance”?
“The thing about Saul is that I don’t really think he goes anywhere,” Franco laughed. “That’s his tragedy.”
What do you think? Would you like to see a “Pineapple Express” and “Superbad” crossover? Or is that just too strange? Sound off below.

Movie teen queens |

1. Molly Ringwald
Thanks to starring turns in nearly every essential John Hughes film, from 16 Candles and The Breakfast Club to her portrayal of New Wave nerd Andie Walsh in Pretty in Pink, Molly Ringwald solidified her status as the ultimate Teen Queen over 20 years ago.
2. Alicia Silverstone
With so few teen flicks on her resume (not that I can ignore my guiltiest pleasure, The Crush), one might wonder why Alicia Silverstone ranks so high on this list. As if! Just dust off your copy of Clueless and you’ll see her steal the spotlight as Beverly Hills brat-turned-matchmaker Cher Horowitz in this generation-defining film.
3. Kirsten Dunst
Luckily, this isn’t a democracy, it's a cheerocracy! As a result, Kirsten Dunst double back handsprings her way on to the top 10 as tart-tongued Torrance Shipman in this tumbletastic, spirit finger-filled, instantly-quotable teen comedy. Go Toros!
4. Winona Ryder
Lucas, Beetlejuice…need I go on? Sure. Great Balls of Fire, Mermaids. More? Yes! Edward Scissorhands, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael And? Heathers, the satire of satires, the blackest of black comedies, the incredibly clever cult classic. Winona Ryder’s pièce de résistance.
5. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has admitted to wanting an Academy Award. She shouldn’t hold her breath. Her MTV Movie Awards for Mean Girls, Teen Choice trophy for Freaky Friday, and Razzie for I Know Who Killed Me will have to suffice. In any case, the troubled tart has racked up enough credits over the years to warrant a top-10 ranking. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that “the actress” will ever make it to the next level, cementing her status as a Teen Queen.
6. Jennifer Grey
She may be M.I.A., but who can forget the funny she brought to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or the Dirty Dancing she delivered with Patrick Swayze? The fact of the matter is nobody puts Baby in a corner, and nobody forgets to put Jennifer Grey on this list!
7. Julia Stiles
She made a mark in 10 Things I Hate About You, impressed us in O, and appeared in The Prince and Me, but Julia Stiles secured a spot on the Teen Queen top 10 with her performance as a ballerina with a bleak future in the surprise box office smash, Save the Last Dance.
8. Reese Witherspoon
Despite winning an Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, you can’t deny that Reese Witherspoon was a Teen Queen once upon a time. Who can forget that naughty roller coaster ride next to Marky Mark in Fear? What about the crucial taxi cab scene in Cruel Intentions? Those roles were riveting, but Reese’s best piece was Election in which she played ambitious and malicious highschooler Tracy Enid Flick.
9. Jennifer Love Hewitt
We know she can scream (I Know What You Did Last Summer); we know she can scam (Heartbreakers); but who knew she could make us smile? In Can’t Hardly Wait, a high school party pic reminiscent of a John Hughes classic, a charming Jennifer Love Hewitt actually entertains us as Amanda, a prom queen with an identity crisis.
10. Elisabeth Shue
I could have (and possibly should have) put someone else on this list. I bet many of you are wondering where Mandy Moore, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Neve Campbell are. Too bad! Between her roles in The Karate Kid, as Ralph Macchio’s main squeeze, and Adventures in Babysitting, as a high school senior who teaches a car full of kids a lot about life during a night filled with thieves and Thor, Elisabeth Shue has easily earned the right to hang out alongside Molly Ringwald and Alicia Silverstone! |

Five Innovations in James Cameron’s Avatar |
Aug 7, 2008 |
Petes1234567 |

Lets take a look at five of the many technological innovations that James Cameron employed in his upcoming sci-fi epic 3D film Avatar.
Performance Capture Workflow: A lot of the film was captured using a performance capture technique similar to that of which Robert Zemeckis filmed Beowulf. So Cameron developed a virtual camera which will allow his to point it at his actors and see them as their computer generated characters in real time.
Facial Capture Head Rig: A camera takes digital shots of the actor’s face, allowing the computer generated character to have 100% facial movement in the real time workflow.
Facial Performance Replacement: In traditional filmmaking they use ADR (or additional Dialogue Replacement) when filmmakers need a cleaner take of the actor’s dialogue, or need to fudge in a new line. But with a traditional film, you really need to trick a shot to make it work. The lips don’t always match up, and sometimes, if you’providing an entirely new line of dialogue, filmmakers usually resort to a wide shot or a behind the head shot, so that you can’t see the lips of the actor on screen. Since 60% of Avatar is performance capture, he has designed a way to insert a new facial scan/dialogue capture on an existing performance.
Simulcam: A camera set-up which allows them to follow or monitor a virtual character which was captured in performance capture into a live action environment in real-time. It also allows them to see what a virtual backgrounds will look like in a live-action shot.
Fusion 3-D Camera System: The Fusion 3-D camera system was co-developed by James Cameron and and Vince Pace. The rig uses two Sony HDCF950 HD cameras to create stereoscopic 3-D. Cameron first used the system on his 2003 IMAX film Ghosts of the Abyss. It has since been used by Robert Rodriguez on Spy Kids 3-D and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, and most recently on Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert and Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Read more about some of the technological challenges of the production on THR.com. Avatar will hit theaters on December 18th 2009.

SDCC EXCL: A Resident Evil: Degeneration Interview |
Aug 7, 2008 |
SexiVixxEN |
Other |
There are all kinds packed into Room 2 of the convention center housing the San Diego Comic-Con. Young. Old. Gamers. Fathers. Babies (I'm not kiddin'.) Chainsaw-wielding bandaged imps. And the occasional emo-haired Leon Kennedy wannabes dressed to the hilt in his S.T.A.R.S uniform and ready to pop a cap in some zombie's cranium. Luckily for the zombies in attendance, of which there are a few (gored out with ragged clothes and haunting dead eyes), these Redfield clones are not carrying live rounds.
The gang's all here to see Sony's full trailer for Resident Evil: Degeneration, the first feature-length CG-animated film to spring from the successful Capcom video game series. The preview is greeted with stifled chirps of delight as fans watch Leon and Claire Redfield reunite to take on an all-new T-Virus menace. They respond to it like the walking dead take to a fresh corpse with its exposed steaming entrails splayed all about it. Sony has served up a veritable appetizer and the crowd wants more. And so producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and director Makoto Kamiya - visiting from Japan - field questions about this latest Resident Evil title.
Set several years after Raccoon City is blown to bits, Degeneration picks up in an anonymous U.S. airport where a bio-terror attack raises the dead and unleashes a few surprising monstrosities. "Leon is, of course, a pro at handling these kinds of situations so he cooperates with Claire to handle the situation. There will be a lot of mysteries and incidents they have to take care of," explains Kobayashi. When asked by an attendee if sparks flare between the two zombie protagonists, the producer reveals a new character to the Resident Evil universe named "Angela, so you've got Claire and Angela - it's up to Leon to take the pick." The audience applauds. They love it. Twelve years after the first game's debut, the Resident Evil franchise - through sequels and a lucrative live action films - show little signs of loosening its bite on its collective fanbase.
Later in the day, I swing on by the Grand Hotel to talk briefly with Kobayashi and Kamiya about the creation of Degeneration. It's the first interview I conduct with a translator involved and it goes seamlessly.
Before this foray into the RE world, Kimiya served as the special effects director on Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. His other credits include the '95 Gamera and the two sequels that followed.
ShockTillYouDrop.com: Does this film fall into the continuity of the films or the games?
Hiroyuki Kobayashi: We keep the Milla Jovovich films on the side because they're not connected. The thing is, when we came up with the idea of a CGI feature film, we wanted to do something that would be a sequel to the video games. With Leon and Claire appearing in this, this would obviously be a sequel to Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 which features Leon.
Shock: Who originally sparked to the idea of doing this film - was it Sony or Capcom?
Kobayashi: This actually fruited from both sides. Capcom wanted to do a CGI film and Sony Pictures came to us saying they wanted to do one based on Resident Evil. Through our discussion, we needed to pick a director and of the games I've worked on, I worked with Kamiya-san on one title and knew I wanted to work with him again.
Shock: When did production begin? Take me through the timeline of making a film like this...
Kobayashi: It was about the fall of 2006 when Sony and Capcom thought about doing this. After that, we spent the winter with Kamiya-san, had a meeting with him and asked him if he'd like to do it.
Makoto Kamiya: Once we got into 2007, that's when we started to talk about the story and kept on developing it until the summer of '07. We did auditions for the motion caption actors and then had to storyboard everything. The motion capturing happened in December of last year. We didn't start working on the CGI until the beginning of this year.
Shock: Wow, that's a lot sooner than I thought.
Kobayashi: And obviously, regarding the scripting process, it has to be faithful to the video game franchise and we didn't want to contradict any facts. That was something I made sure was correct. But I knew this wasn't a video game, it's a film so it had to be fun and entertaining. Valid as a film, not a video game.
Shock: Was it liberating to know you could creatively go wild in the CGI realm?
Kobayashi: One freedom we had was that we could set this anywhere, create any environment. Plus we didn't have to pay out in the big Hollywood style. [laughs] Leon and Claire never complained about their contractual guarantees and would never have to complain about working after 6pm.
Shock: For fans of the series, what villains can we expect to see surface with the exception of the undead?
Kamiya: I can't really talk about that too much. Other than zombies, you'll be seeing some new creatures. This film does feature a lot of zombies though, I'm also a big fan of the zombie genre, so you'll be seeing a lot of zombies going wild at the airport.
Shock: Kamiya-san, can you talk about your transition from the special effects experience you amassed until this point to directing something fully animated?
Kamiya: I'm a big fan of the Resident Evil series, so I was excited when I was offered this project, but I also know how big it is so I wasn't sure if I was worthy of it. It was tough, but fun at the same time. As you know, I've been working in the world of visual effects, but I wanted to go in different directions. This film served as a great way to go into that transition, in a sense. If I was to work on my first film with major stars, it could've been very tough. But this was a great transition. In the future I'd like to work on more CG films, but I want to branch into live-action films as well.
Shock: I see you have a producing credit on Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Kobayashi-san, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the live-action series as a whole since you're so ingrained in the games.
Kobayashi: I wasn't really involved in any of the production process of the first film, but the second and third I actually was involved. I got to read the script and was on set. As live-action films, they're enjoyable and work in their own way. At the same time, they're Milla Jovovich films. While I do enjoy them, I personally wanted to work on something that was closer to the video game franchise. This was a great experience to grant me my wish.
Shock: Is Sony and Capcom now mapping out a future for more films like this?
Kobayashi: We haven't even finished Degeneration yet, so I really can't say.
Kamiya: When I go back to Japan I have to finish this up, so I can't think of my next project or the future of the CG franchise at all.
Kobayashi: If this is financially successful, that's when we'll start thinking about the future of the film franchise.
At the time of this writing, there are no plans to turn Resident Evil: Degeneration into a video game. Look for the film on DVD and Blu-Ray near the end of this year. Click here for our hi-res photo gallery. |

Hunter Stephenson’s Movie Review: Pineapple Express |
Aug 7, 2008 |
SexiVixxEN |
Other |
Seth Rogen just got a free pass. I mean, a 9.5, CHUD? FirstShowing says Pineapple Express “breaks new ground” and implies that Rogen’s is the “best stoner comedy ever made.” I’m not really sure what movies one needs to zoom past to make the best stoner comedy of all time. It’s sort of like being the world champion at MAPPY in The King of Kong. More accurately, this might be the best stoner comedy by default, because it makes you wish you stayed home, packed a bowl and watched Caddyshack, or Fletch, one of the hazy ’80s 10.0 action-comedies this is aspiring to be. The first scenes with Rogen in PE are a pale if loving homage to that latter film’s classic aliases like Dr. Rosenpenis, likewise with the retro instrumental theme music.
Pineapple Express lacks the liquid-bowel laughs of last summer’s Superbad, which was also written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. And remember the awesome fan-made Superbad: The Action Movie trailer we posted? That two-minute clip exuded the superior goofball tension and gunfire I expected when Seth Rogen expressed surprise at getting a greenlight for his exotic blend of inhales and mayhem. So, where the hell is this film’s totes memorable “exploding toilet”-like scene set to MIA’s “Paper Planes”? Where is “Paper Planes”? That song’s inclusion in the trailers undoubtedly netted this movie an extra $5-10 million, but it’s MIA. An argument against this review and in defense of the movie will be that “Well, it’s not that type of comedy” and “it’s not that type of action movie.” Therefore it’s not supposed to be really funny or really thrilling? And the reason for this is, “because it’s a stoner movie, OMG, it’s not supposed to be that good?” Okay.
Instead, the audience is served a party sub in which all of the dead and bloody stuff is unevenly packed into the last third; followed by endless amounts of lazy meta-improv between James Franco, Rogen and Danny McBride (who almost saves the movie) sitting on their self-gratified asses telling us how amazing the movie we just watched was. At least with the Judd Apatow-produced and much funnier, Step Brothers, Will Ferrell & Co. go out with a bang with a rock opera, some unclassic Billy Joel, and the affable phrase “Catalina Wine Mixer Motherfucker!” If PE is the new gold standard for American comedy as proclaimed by every glossy magazine this month, I’m going to go take a shit and read my collection of National Lampoon magazines for the next year like the black dude in Summer School.
CHUD says that James Franco deserves an Oscar nomination for Saul Silver. Why? For stealing Brad Pitt’s resin-torched laugh in True Romance and pronouncing the word “man” like it’s made out of taffy (or “God’s Vagina,” one of the only good lines here)? The chemistry and the bromance Franco and Rogen shared 10 years ago on Freaks and Geeks felt genuine and was far more impressive. Their aimless characters were similarly brought together by the randomness of life i.e. high school. Franco gives great performances in that series, and he’s consistently hilarious and inventive throughout. When his Freak apologized to Rogen’s Freak after making a joke at the expense of the latter’s tuba-playing girlfriend having a baby cock, viewers cried (many were high)! It was brilliant. When Rogen and Franco have their falling out in Pineapple Express, followed by a stilted apology, it doesn’t mean anything, even for a “lowbrow action comedy” in the spirit of Lethal Weapon or 48 Hours. Clearly, the filmmakers want and need us to be invested, but it plays like two kids with lobotomies walking in opposite directions after an argument. You could argue these characters are supposed to be exactly that (and you’d feel tainted), and you could argue that this describes many American moviegoers when they exit the theater (and you’d be right, or Hollywood Elsewhere).
In contrast, we believe that Harold and Kumar depend on each other because they’re both insecure about their futures, girls, unpredictable off-road trips, white people and NPH’s ecstasy habit. And they both really like good weed. Cheech and Chong are bonded by alliteration, road trips, stupidity, poverty, broads, and the carefree fuck-the-man fumes (nice dreams?) of the ’60s and ’70s. And they both really like good weed and blow. In Smiley Face, Anna Faris is the modern, funny but troubled girl (and all guys have dated one) who goes it solo, smokes herself out and simultaneously represents the answer and problem to everything today (which is why “that girl” tends to ultimately disappear or become a doctor or lawyer). Stoner comedies tend to reflect and subvert the day’s culture. Rather than subverting our culture, Pineapple Express blows it back at us, to the point where a promising indie director named David Gordon Green is being cheerleaded by critics for making a just-average crowd-pleaser and “adequately handling action.”
In place of the timeless comedic duo we expected from the “New Kings of Funny,” we’re offered a wannabe M. Fletch Fletcher and a talented actor who’s impersonating an actor playing a stoner and seems secretly bored. And why Rogen and Franco’s characters aren’t shot in the head by the film’s goons, nicely played by Kevin Corrigan (a great stoner in Freaks and Geeks) and Craig Robinson (The Office), before this overhyped comedy goes soggy Black Rain is a valid question not worth wasting good weed on. Sort of like Adam Sandler’s Bulletproof.

Lucas says `Indiana Jones' needs Ford to continue |
Aug 7, 2008 |

NICASIO, Calif. (AP) — George Lucas says he's already identified the one person who can keep the "Indiana Jones" franchise going: Harrison Ford.
The filmmaker scoffed at the possibility of passing the famed fedora from Ford to Shia LaBeouf, the 22-year-old actor who played Indy's son Mutt Williams in this summer's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
"He is Indiana Jones," Lucas said of Ford. "If Indiana Jones wasn't in it, you'd have to call it 'Mutt Williams and the search for Elvis.' ... "Yeah, it's 'Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis.'"
Lucas sat down with AP Television at his Big Rock Ranch outside San Francisco, where he said he didn't pay much attention to the reception from critics and fans to "Crystal Skull," a sci-fi adventure set in the 1950s. But he definitely sees a future for Dr. Jones. A fifth movie is certainly a possibility.
"The franchise really depends on me coming up with a good idea," Lucas said. "And that series is very research-intensive. So we're doing research now to see if we can't come up with another object for him to chase ... hopefully we'll come up with something."
Meanwhile, the 64-year-old has another popular franchise to nurture: "Star Wars."
Lucas produced the animated "Star Wars: Clone Wars," hitting theaters Aug. 15. It will be followed in the fall with the launch of an animated TV series by the same name, airing on the Cartoon Network and TNT. Lucas plans a live-action "Star Wars" TV series as well, and he's also looking into re-releasing the six "Star Wars" films using new 3-D technology.
"We're trying to do that," Lucas said. "We worked on some, with a company that was developing the technology a few years ago to convert films into 3-D, we worked with them. But the system works great. It's just not very practical. So what we've been working on since then is to develop a sort of practical way to do it. And we will get there. It's just a technological challenge."
The producer-director waxed nostalgic for the days when talking to the press wasn't necessary to promote a film.
"I like when you focus on making movies, you make movies and people go to see them," he said. "But there's this whole other industry that's been created which the world hasn't quite adjusted to or caught up to or figured out. It's the same thing with copyright and all kinds of other things where things are going around that I'm sure at some point will become more civilized. I'm just waiting. Like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, I'll go out and adopt twins if they'll pay me $14 million to do it."

Survey Of Movie Goers Tells Us Nothing |

Do you ever get the feeling that you are just missing the point on something? I get that a lot…usually because I am, in fact, missing the point. I try to be one of those guys who just sees things clearly and “gets it” immediately, but I’m just not. That’s why after looking at survey results about R-rated comedies, I’m wondering why I don’t think they say what other people seem to think they say. Confused? Good, let’s get to the data.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ticket seller Fandango polled 1,000 people who were visiting their site about topics like R rated movies, graphic humor, and Robert Downey, Jr. donning blackface in Tropic Thunder. The results led to a headline “R Ratings Might Help Comedies.” With raunchy comedies like Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder going into wide release this month, this is information worth noticing. However, when I read about who they surveyed, I wonder if it really should be extrapolated to movie goers in general.
The article states that “prospective patrons of Sony's just-opened Pineapple Express and the Aug. 20 opener Tropic Thunder from DreamWorks/Paramount were asked whether they were more or less interested in the films because of their restricted ratings.” So, the respondents of this survey were people who already logged into Fandango and were interested in two comedies that are being advertised as raunchy. My guess is most people who want to see this movie so much that they are buying tickets ahead of time are probably big fans of this genre, right? They came up with the following responses to their survey questions:
75% of respondents said they were “more interested” in seeing Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express due to their R ratings.
83% said they weren’t turned off by graphic humor.
94% said they weren’t offended by Robert Downey Jr.’s use of blackface in Tropic Thunder.
If this were a random sampling, it might actually mean something, but, again these are people who were already planning on seeing the two R rated movies in question! Of course they aren’t turned off by graphic humor. If they were, they wouldn’t go to a “weed action comedy” or movie where one of the main characters is in blackface and the other is a cocaine addict. So, the people going to see a movie that is advertised with Robert Downey, Jr. in blackface aren’t offended by Robert Downey Jr. in blackface? That’s shocking!
So, what does Fandango’s survey tell us? Nothing. It says that people who like raunchy comedies aren’t bothered by raunchy comedies. Boy, thanks for that.

Steven Spielberg exits 'Chicago 7' |

Steve Spielberg will no longer direct The Trial Of The Chicago 7, reports MovieWeb.
Sacha Baron Cohen had been persuaded by Spielberg to play political campaigner Abbie Hoffman in the film, which is based around eight Vietnam protesters accused of inciting a riot at the 1968 Democrat party convention.
Producer Walter F. Parkes explained that the director had quit the project due to the WGA strike and his commitment to the upcoming Tintin film.
"He is not going to do it," Parkes noted. "He kind of had a moment of availability to do it, and the strike got in the way. We were unable to do the script work that Steven felt he needed and then, by the time the strike was over, he had already committed himself to begin production on Tintin.
"It's not inconceivable that he would come back, but for now, he's had to move on to Tintin, which is something that he's been working on for 20 years." |

The Hollywood Reporter has published an interview with director James Cameron talking about his highly-anticipated upcoming feature, Avatar, coming to theaters on December 18, 2009. Here's a clip from the interview:
When completed, Cameron expects "Avatar" to be about 60% CG animation, based on characters created using a newly developed performance capture-based process, and 40% live action, with a lot of VFX in the imagery.
"It is the most challenging film I've ever made," Cameron said.
Still, the innovative filmmaker and digital 3-D pioneer and champion has never shifted his emphasis from storytelling.
"You have to make a good film that would be a good film under any circumstances," he said. "You have to put the narrative first. The reality is no matter how many (3-D) screens we get, you are still going to have a large number of people -- possibly the majority of people -- who see the film in a 2-D |

The kids are already exhibiting some savvy Hollywood behavior!
However, Jonasphiles and Selena fanatics have discovered that the duo 'outed' their relationship in two different interviews.
Selena told Twist magazine:
"I had dinner on the beach with a crush and there were lights on the palm trees! Then, went walking on the beach, and after that we slow danced. Wait, it gets better. While we were slow dancing…my crush and I had our first kiss! And after it, I leaned back and I said, 'You cheated.' And he said, 'Why' and I said, 'I don't kiss on the first date.' Then he said, 'Well, I never really play by the rules.' I was waiting for a a director to say, 'Cut' I was like, 'Are we shooting this right now?"
Nick Jonas also recently shared with Girls' Life magazine:
"On one date, the girl said to me, 'I don't kiss on the first date.' So I said, 'I don't follow the rules.'" The brothers high-five to that one. "Ooooh! It was so good!"
Y'all gotta be more careful the next time you chat with the press, dear ones!

Barry Levinson Taking a Mystery 'Train' |

If there's one movie descriptive that can actually get my jaded heart racing, it's "in the style of L.A. Confidential." Sure, it's glib, and probably sells the potential film and its source material short, but I can't help it, it's a magical phrase. And The Hollywood Reporter (by way of Lakeshore Entertainment) used it to describe Barry Levinson's latest movie.
Levinson is set to direct an adaptation of Peter Dexter's novel Train, a story set in 1950's Southern California. It centers around Miller Packard, a white sergeant in the San Diego Police Department, who has little time for the hypocrisy and racism of his age. An avid golfer, he befriends a troubled young African-American caddy named Lionel "Train" Walk, who harbors knowledge of an unreported murder that haunts his past. The city politics and racism of the 50's surround the murder investigation, and threaten their friendship.
Dexter's books have been popular in Hollywood recently -- he was the pen behind Mulholland Falls and The Paperboy is currently in production with Paul Verhoven and Jan de Bont. Unlike with Falls, he won't be penning the script this time around. That job falls to Allison Burnett, who's a pretty popular writer at Lakeshore, adapting Fame and penning Untraceable for them.
Hopefully, a Cinematical reader or two can chime in on the book. From its reviews, the source material sounds pretty enticing. Here's hoping this can not only be a comeback for Levinson, but a noir rival for L.A. Confidential.

It's not some big, gasp-worthy piece of news here, but if you are among the masses who love Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Jessica Hynes, and devour all things Spaced, you should check out the Pegg-run interview over at Collider.
Why would he run the interview? Well, Collider head Steve Weintraub got smacked in the head by a falling, curtain-holding beam as the back of Hall H collapsed at Comic-Con. Since this world isn't one of brief birdies and quick, 100% recoveries, Pegg agreed to take over the interviewing duties.
As you can imagine, this is no well-paced interview or thought-provoking questions and serious responses. This is full-force Pegg, Wright, and Hynes. Imagine a lot of jokes, riffing on Weintraub, and a neverending sea of media references in true Spaced form. Should Pegg's career ever tank, or slow down a bit, that man could make a fortune with his own reality show -- Simon Pegg and the Ultimate Geek Showdown.

On the sixth of every month, Zack Snyder sends forth another Watchmen production diary. This month, the hosting honor goes to Yahoo! Movies, and I have to gently scold them for getting it online so late in the day. Half the point is the date! It's a countdown, after all. But given the insane amount of Watchmen stuff we've had recently, I'm going to generously forgive them. Go watch it, and come back to say how much you want to climb inside of it.
This month, it's all about the biggest star of this year's ComicCon -- the Owlship! It shows the hard working men and women who constructed the goggle-eyed ship, a few shots of it "flying" around the set, and a look at its highly detailed interior. (No shot of its coffee machine, though.) It's spoiler free, so those of you new to the story can watch and enjoy. I now covet a miniature version of the ship, such as Zack Snyder is zooming around the set. If something similar is not on store shelves come March, I will be bitterly disappointed.
Watchmen opens March 6th, 2009.

'Pineapple' Opens to Big Bucks |

Although I'd seen it twice already, I went ahead and accompanied my father to a showing of Pineapple Express last night, only to be greeted with a surprisingly packed 8:10 showing in the theater's largest auditorium. When we exited, the immediate lobby was fairly lined up with those waiting to catch the next showtime, and when I dashed across the hall to peek in on the 9:30 showing that some of my friends had caught, it was in an auditorium half the size and equally packed, down to people actually sitting on the floor space typically reserved for those in wheelchairs (fire hazard, schmire hazard).
I only say this because, if I hadn't gone last night, I would've been truly taken aback with the film's record-breaking $12.5 million opening yesterday. (In comparison, Superbad opened to $12.3 million last year, but on a Friday.) This bodes better for Pineapple than I had expected in general, what with it only having a week to itself before Tropic Thunder does its best to snatch away its overlapping audience.
Oh, and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 also raked in almost $6 million itself, so, um, yay for that.

Discuss: Movies That Deserved a Different Rating |
Aug 7, 2008 |
Petes1234567 |

Over the past few weeks, movie ratings have been a popular topic for discussion. While Kevin Smith's upcoming Zack and Miri Make a Porno appealed an NC-17 rating (and won), The Dark Knight was enjoying a record-setting box office take and a pretty controversial PG-13 rating. Once again, we ask: Why is sex more inappropriate than violence? Should raunchy language and a few "thrusts" be condemned while a dude with half his face falling off and a psychopathic, murderous clown get off practically unscathed? And are there other issues at work here? Does a film with a giant budget and an all-star cast get it "easier" than a smaller film with a lesser-known cast and a director who chain smokes profanity?
No doubt there are shady politics at play here (as is all over this fine country of ours), and over the years there have been a number of films that deserved a different rating. Over on OMG Lists, they currently have up a list of six wrongly rated movies; films that, for one reason or another, deserved either a lower or a higher rating. It's a weird system, for sure -- these days, if you're a comedy, you kinda want that 'R' rating because your box office take will most likely be higher. However, if you're a horror flick, you want to try for a PG-13. Strange world we live in ...
But anyway, among the films featured on their list are Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which, at the time, received an R-rating because of a few profanity-laced scenes, but totally could've gotten away with a PG-13. Or what about Jaws ... with its PG rating! Hey, it's a film about a giant shark that devours people -- bring the whole family!
And hey, did Showgirls really deserve an NC-17 rating? Is there like a naked breast count that, if passed, automatically puts you in NC-17 territory? Heck, two naked breasts is like seeing 150 naked breasts, in my opinion. Look at Can't Buy Me Love -- that has a few naked breasts in it, and it's rated PG-13. Or what about the original Bad News Bears (rated PG)? No naked breasts, but the racism is ridiculous and you've got little kids drinking alcohol! I don't get it. I don't think we'll ever get it.
Which films do you think deserved different ratings?

Back in May, George Lucas excitedly told Fox News that he had an idea to make a new Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford.
“I haven’t even told Steven or Harrison this,” Lucas said. “But I have an idea to make Shia [LeBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison [Ford] come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out.”
Lucas sat down with the AP earlier this week and assured them if there were to be a fifth Indy film, stating that there is the possibility of such, it would star Harrison Ford. But he said that a Mutt Williams spin-off film is also possible, but it wouldn’t be an Indiana Jones film.
“If Indiana Jones wasn’t in it, you’d have to call it ‘Mutt Williams and the search for Elvis.’ … “Yeah, it’s ‘Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis.’”
With George, you never know if he’s joking or not. Could his idea really have been Mutt Williams and the search for Elvis? Would anyone really pay to see such a movie? Apparently Lucas gave out the same title to MTV during their interview as well. So either he thinks its funny or is testing the waters. Please say it was a joke.

A rep for the Samantha Who? star confirmed over the weekend the actress was diagnosed with breast cancer following a recent MRI, but the Enquirer insists Christina made the drastic decision to have both breasts removed before trying any other method of treatment because she carries a hereditary cancer gene.
Christina’s own mother, actress Nancy Priddy, is a two-time breast cancer survivor. She underwent a double mastectomy in 1977.
(It seems unlikely any woman would “opt” to have both breasts removed until she’s sure MDs have utilized all of the less invasive forms of treatment to save her boobies and her life. We call tabloid B.S on this one, but feel free to draw your own conclusions.)
“Her doctors were taking no chances that the cancer could spread to the other breast even if only one breast was initially involved in the diagnosis,” says a source close to the 36-year-old.
“Doctors are fairly confident that they got all the cancer because they caught it early….After the operations, Christina reminded herself that her mom is the classic example of a courageous cancer survivor..Christina

Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Robert Whiting’s Tokyo Underworld: The Fast Times and Hard Life of an American Gangster in Japan. Frank Baldwin, the screnwriter of Phillip Noyce’s upcoming film The Art of Making Money, will make his feature film debut. Published in September 2000, Tokyo Underworld is an “unorthodox chronicle of the rise of Japan, Inc.”:
“Through the eyes of Nick Zappetti, a former GI, former black marketer, failed professional wrestler, bungling diamond thief who turned himself into “the Mafia boss of Tokyo and the king of Rappongi,” we meet the players and the losers in the high-stakes game of postwar finance, politics, and criminal corruption in which he thrived. Here’s the story of the Imperial Hotel diamond robbers, who attempted (and may have accomplished) the biggest heist in Tokyo’s history. Here is Rikidozan, the professional wrestler who almost single-handedly revived Japanese pride, but whose own ethnicity had to be kept secret. And here is the story of the intimate relationships shared by Japan’s ruling party, its financial combines, its ruthless criminal gangs, the CIA, American Big Business, and perhaps at least one presidential relative. Here is the underside of postwar Japan, which is only now coming to light.”
Mario Puzo, author of The Godfather, called the book “A fascinating look at some fascinating people who show how democracy advances hand in hand with crime in Japan.” I love American gangster films but it will be great to see a refreshing take on the genre. And I’ve always loved the setting of Tokyo. It isn’t used enough in American cinema.

A Pineapple Express / Superbad Crossover Movie? |

At Comic Con, Judd Apatow joked about a possible Pineapple Express / Superbad crossover movie, where the paths of all the characters would cross. Everyone thought it was just a joke. Besides, Seth Rogen has expressed his disinterest in doing another Superbad, even though the movie studio has been clamoring for a college tale.
This week our friends at MTV talked with Pineapple Express star James Franco, who told them it’s a real idea. But it gets even weirder. According to Franco, part of the idea for the “unprecedented crossover” is that it could be filmed by two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie. Even Franco admits that it “doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.” I’m not sure the Directors Guild of America would allow it.
The idea of the crossover became hot in Hollywood when Nick Fury showed up in Iron Man and Tony Stark made an appearance in The Incredible Hulk. But truth is, Kevin Smith created the ultimate crossover movie years ago with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which included the characters from every Kevin Smith film at that time. And since Smith, like Apatow, uses the same crew on many films, some of the actors appeared as a couple different characters. For instance, Jason Lee appeared as both Brodie Bruce from Mallrats and Banky Edwards from Chasing Amy.
And with a Pineapple Express / Superbad crossover, thee would be a huge conflict as Seth Rogen appears in both films in major roles. Franco’s idea is to kill one of the characters off, soyou don’t have to deal with it. I think the funnier thing would to be having Seth Rogen, as the cop from Superbad, chasing Seth Rogen as the stoner from Pineapple, down the street. LOL. Yeah, I doubt this will ever happen. I think I’d actually rather see Seth, Evan and Fogell go to college.

Miley Cyrus' Dad Warns Jesse McCartney to Stay Away |

Miley Cyrus' dad, Billy Ray, is reportedly warning Jesse McCartney to stay away from his superstar daughter.
"There's been serious flirting between Jesse and Miley for a while, but Billy Ray won't let them date," a Cyrus family insider tells America's Star magazine. "It's driving them crazy!"
Billy's main concert is the age gap between the pair. Miley's 15; Jesse is 21. "And Jesse also thinks the fact that he's been known to date a lot of young girls in Hollywood has gone against him with Miley’s dad," the source said.
"Jesse's told Billy Ray that he's willing to start out by having a chaperone of his choice around," the pal adds. "But that's not good enough for Billy Ray."
Jesse -- who wrote British singer Leona Lewis' smash hit single Bleeding Love -- has been romantically linked to Aubrey O'Day and Hilary Duff.
Jesse and Miley met when McCartney played himself on Cyrus' smash hit Disney show, Hannah Montana, two years ago; and the pair have stayed close ever since, despite Billy Ray’s disapproval.
The source added, "They're on the phone to each other all the time, and they text each other.
"They tell each other how crazy they are for each other. And how frustrating it is that they're being kept apart!"

Madonna's moviemaking husband Guy Ritchie has launched a scathing attack on London - branding the British capital "ugly."
The Snatch director -- whose films are often set in London -- is disappointed with the way development has "ruined" the city.
He says, "The vast slew of modern buildings are so prosaic, so dull, so cheap.
"They are just blots on the landscape, skid marks lacerating our topography and geography. Paris and Rome are like supermodels in comparison."
Guy, 39, shares a $20m mansion in Marylebone with his superstar wife and their three children.
Guy recently said he was surprised at the love he felt for his adopted son David Banda, 2.
In a magazine interview, he revealed, "Fatherhood is unbelievable. It has taken over my life. But something else surprised me – how much you can love an adopted child, the same as you can love a biological child. I didn’t anticipate that."
